you need depth, and you need quality

if he's their best, they're not a threat

I would compare him straight up to Hamilton (where Hamilton is now)

To think they could have save just over $1.5M and gotten an guy who has almost a whole year of NHL experience under his belt.

Looks like an OK signing, for a team that's fairly thin in the back. A little pricey, not unlike when Calgary brought in Wideman for a high price sometimes you need these guys.

Because Hamilton is a Flame now?

As a 20 year old Johnson had almost the exact same season as Hamilton is coming off.... Johnson has followed that up with 6 straight seasons as at least a top-4 and more often a top-2 D-man.

Two years ago when Johnson was not hurt he would have been the #1 guy on the Flames or maybe #2 with Gio edging him out.

This is not a bad deal. He is not a Norris trophy guy but I believe he is a legitimate #1. I love Brodie but at this point Johnson IMO is better and this deal is in his UFA years. Colorado's problem is depth on D but at $6 million he should not give them cap problems.

Comparing contracts can be misleading. He is great value compared to Wideman or Phaneuf, horrible value compared to Keith.

I think he's a borderline #1 and that's being generous. He's certainly a 1st pairing guy, but he's more a true #2 to me. A true #1 brings offence along with him. EJ has never broken 40 pts, but in fairness he's scored double digits in goals a couple times so he's a pretty good shooter. However he's never played a full NHL season. I honestly think he's been living off his reputation as being a 1st overall pick. It also seems like he's been around forever, but he's still young at 27 so maybe he puts it all together. Maybe not. Sure he can log tons of minutes. But so can Bouwmeester and no ones calling him a #1.

Him being better then Brodie is debatable, but I'd take Brodie over him without thinking twice. Overall I think it's a good deal. 6mil these days for a
team's #1 guy is pretty good. But as long as EJ it's the Avs #1 guy, they won't be going very far IMO.
