Yet they have to be responsible in how they spend their money. I'm not a fan of deficits and worry about how Trudeau will balance the books in 2019.

Missed the beginning so I'm rewatching it now, when will the NDP accept that manufacturing jobs aren't coming back. They asked Harper how they plan on moving Canadas economy forward from the energy industry, well the manufacturing jobs left 30 years ago and aren't coming back yet the NDP keeps talking about it.
Trudeau definitely won the debate, I thought Harper was alright and all Mulcair wanted to do all night is toss around zingers rather then debate, dislike him more then Harper right now.

We need fact checkers when we have a leaders debate.

Every party spends beyond their means. The deficit, at any level, Provincial, Federal, Civic, will still be there hammering my grandchildren 60 years from now.
I have no preference for one party over the other, but it's not like any of them are going to eliminate any deficits. If they balance the budget for a year or two, what will that really accomplish?
If a government tries to scale back spending big time to cut the deficit, they'll be protested and voted out in no time by all affected groups.

I think you guys are all nuts. There is no way that Mulcaire was nearly as bad as people on here are saying. Only way that you could have that view is you came into the debate wanting to dislike Mulcaire. He made many good points, which they are now talking about on the panel.

The talking heads for the Globe seem to think Mulcair won this one.
They must have been watching the wrong show. Even CP seems pretty unanimous about this one.
Edit: Ha ha. It figures I'd post this at the same time as Wingmaker's post above

I don't think you can call a winner in this debate, you can call a loser though. And that was Harper.

I thought Mulcair was easily the worst.
But then, I can't stand him.
That said, I thought he won the first debate, so...

The moderator was a joke IMO. He allowed to much of the leaders talking over one another to make thier point. It's had to understand when you have 2-3 people talking at the same time.

Agreed that the moderator was the worst part of the debate.

I hated this debate - way too much yelling over each other.
I thought Mulcair came off well. Trudeau talked too fast but his points came across. Harper was... Harper. Ugh.
The moderator and the format were terrible. Even the backdrop was terrible. And the bell!

Trudeau smartly brings up in the post-debate scrum the absence of focus on FN issues.
Also, his French is good.
One issue I think deserves some attention is mental health in Canada. A shame nobody seems to be talking about it. Well, other than Bell.

^THIS! Also with leadership reviews that can oust party leaders from all sitting MPs. Australia has a good system in this sense when they recently canned Tony Abbot as Prime Minister.

Well, did they win anything over eachother? Each held their own, each won debate points. I didn't see Harper win any. Cant call a tie between the two?

Again, right on the money.
Can you imagine the result of that level of moderation in the Republican debates? It would come to blows and, at the end of the day, only Trump would be left standing, blathering away at high volume to himself.

I thought mulclair was much better than Trudeau, but Harper was easily the winner as he didn't need to land any knock out punches and came across as the most prime ministerial by far.
Easy to see why the Liberal vote is slipping to the NDP. Who runs on a deficit budget!?

I thought the debate set out a fairly clear difference between the Liberals and NDP. One will spend money in an attempt to boost the economy through investment, the other will try to balance the budgets by reversing tax breaks introduced by the current government and taxing corporations, using the money to invest in certain social programs, namely child care. I know it is popular to choose a winner of a debate. For me, I thought both men made their case very well and both stood up to Harper's classic stance that usually cuts down anyone who has an alternative economic perspective to his own. I think tonight's debate, for the first time, really crystallized a distinction between the Liberals and the NDP.
As far as performances, I thought Trudeau came off as passionate and direct, and I thought Mulcaire came off as measured and deliberate. I think supporters of both parties will be pleased with the performances. The question becomes which plan do Canadians who don't want the Conservatives get behind?
