I don't mean order (although that is interesting) -- I'm talking format. Is there any realistic way to watch the original theatrical versions now? Or is the quality of the blu ray the way to go even though they are "special" edition?

I think biting the bullet of the additional scenes to watch in BluRay is the way to go. It just looks so good, especially the older ones.

I don't think you can find the true original anywhere. My understanding was that it was altered before being released onto video the first time, so the only real way to see the original is to see it in 1977.

But I want to watch them in high quality, which those altered versions would provide.

What should I do?

Lucas is a ####### for making this so hard.
Somewhere out there is something called the "Despecialized Edition", where someone went through and did (as best they could) a shot-by-shot recreation of the original theatrical release using the highest quality sources available for each shot. Usually, this meant using the Blu-Ray as a starting point and then using different editing techniques to remove the content that has been added over the years.

I have no idea if it's any good, and I don't know where it can be found, but I'm sure it's out there if you look for it.

I'm kind of hoping that there will be re-releases of the original trilogy as they were upon theatrical release before they launch the new one. I'm sure they can transfer the old film onto newer stock and clean them right up.

I think this is what every fan wants. The original film cleaned up and restored, not filled with Lucas' ridiculous changes.

Hopefully now that Disney owns it and Lucas is no longer in control they will do something like that. It would certainly sell.

I think it's usually about 4-6 weeks out. That's the most I've been able to nail down.

They did release the unaltered versions on regular dvd a few years back, they were packaged with the special edition ones as two disc sets. That's probably the best bet

Polygon reviewed the latest version (2.5 for episode 4) and said it was the best version of the film ever released bar none

Incorrect, the entire original trilogy is completed. Ep 4 is on version 2.5, Ep 5 is 2.0, and Ep 6 is 1.0 (with 2.0 supposed to be coming out later this year). They're all done by the same guy and you can read all the information about them here (just look for the posts by Harmy)

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/for...ects/forum/17/

Note that there are NO download links anywhere on those forums, so hopefully there's no issue in posting the link

That's what I meant, V2.5 is much better than V2.0. I've been waiting for 5 and 6 to be available.

Empire Strikes Back 2.0 is virtually equal to A New Hope 2.5, as they were done very close together and both use the 2011 Blu-Ray release as the primary source. The only changes that 2.5 will apparently have are more dubbing and subtitle options with a few visual detail tweaks that most people won't even notice. And Return of the Jedi 1.0 is still the best quality version of the unaltered film you can find anywhere, though it's primary source was the 2004 special edition DVD's. That one should have a very noticeable difference when 2.0 comes out
