Remember back when there was some new arena layout concept introduced and it had the Flames logo in its mock up? This was like two years ago I wanna say?
That's probably exactly what Ken King is talking about.

It's not vitriol. But the Flames want public funds for this and will utter nonsense like that to get that money. Because building this will transform Calgary....really? It's awesome, but it's not transforming Calgary. The green LRT line is something that transforms a city, not a new sports arena. These are just the tried and true arguments that have been used in the past, even as they've been mostly debunked.

Wow. A lot more opposition to this than I was expecting. I was against public funds but as soon as I heard the city would own it all then I did a complete 180

I honestly tried, but the amount of symplistic statements made by King and the boosters on here seem to be absorbed by the whole lot of you. therefore, I will use cheeky sarcasm and short statements instead of reasoned fact and analysis to show that this proposal is BS.

Why does KK just leave out the Remidiation of the area or upgrading of infrastructure as any cost?

Jesus H...I dont get the negativity for this right now.
1) We all think this is a world class city. This helps to make it a reality. Cutlure, sports, tourism, will all benefit.
2) We all hate city / prov / fed tax money going to it. This does that. The city owns the building and land, and the users (ticket holders, developers, etc) pay for it. The CRL is generating tax revenue from a location that was providing next to no tax revenue
3) We all hate McMahon + the Dome compared to other arenas. We get a world class facility for toddlers to Olympians / professionals
4) We all hate polluted sites, especially in the middle of our city...we have one of the largest in Canada (apparently). This helps to take care of that.
I was thoroughly impressed with the vision. Of course the devil is in the details. But this is a humongous opportunity.

I think this is the first step in a long journey to the ground breaking, not completion of the project.

Simple is a terrible idea. Nothing new or interesting or revolutionary has ever come from keeping things simple.
Calgary wouldn't exist if it was built on people "keeping it simple".

Dead serious. This is stupid. Library comparison, size of upper bowl vs size of suites. Building location, mls comment. Marketing the field house as somewhere teams will come to play soccer. Yeah I can't see it. Creosote...
Why not just build a damn nice hockey arena that's one of the best out there.
Oh yeah..because this sports complex will turn us into Paris or New York and solidify our legacy in history. Also madonnas finally going to be able to perform in Calgary. Wow. I'm very disappointed. Looks like trying to kill 5 birds with one stone. So we really need a field house, there's contamination here, madonna needs to perform in Calgary, new cfl stadium and new nhl arena.
I'd like to see these projects separated.

The negativity has to do with the very same things you are saying:
1) studies prove this statement is false.
2) Studies prove this statement is false. There is no beenfit in the city owninig the land, CRL's are public financing, and there is already a plan in place to gentrify this area in a similar vein of East village.
3) the olympic argument is a joke and studies reveal they are net money detractors (we will not get into the olympic argument right now)
4) we have no proof of the stuff KK is saying or what the city had planned for this area.
The negativity stems from everyone spouting the same arguments that other cities have done for decades, despite the fact that none of these arguments hold water!!!
