My Stamps attendance will increase from .5 a year to 5 a year based on bathrooms and concourse improvements alone.....I can enjoy a summer evening on my deck.

I love everything I am seeing so far. Fieldhouse, Multiple Rinks, Event Centre, Public Transit, 330,000,000.00 in combined designed savings. Just one concern about the location:
Are they going to have to shut down the Sentry Box? What will happen to us nerds? WON'T SOMEONE IN THE SPORTS WORLD THINK OF THE NERDS?!

The stamps play 9 home games every regular season, probably an average of 6-7 happen on nice days, with maybe an average of 1-2 on "not nice days".

Well here is your answer then. The cost of a retractable roof for "not may" days likely outweighs the benefit.
Honestly I have no issue with it one way or another. Anything will be better than McMahon.

Sure, but the city just doesn't provide that without a level of uncertainty. How many days have we seen go from hot to crazy hail storm recently?
I would guess that if the MLS is ever in the plans here, the weather would be removed as an obstacle because at least the roof is closed.

yeah for sure, I was responding to the guy who didn't think Calgary lost many concerts because of the dome...that is flat out false
roof is a major factor for sure

Fixed roof on stadium?
DO NOT LIKE.
When all is said and done, if this thing proceeds, there won't be any stadium roof, I'll bet.

I'm sorry, I just don't see the value in this proposal. I had higher expectations after comments from the Flames that people would be pleasantly surprised. I'm not.
They can spin it as an "event centre" and a "fieldhouse" all they want. Lets call a spade a spade. It's a professional hockey arena and a football stadium masquerading as a fieldhouse.
It's funny that Ken King mentioned Yellowknife's field house (assuming Nehkara's comments are correct). That facility cost $22 million in 2006. It's a very plain facility, but I'm assuming it serves the community just fine. Why don't we just build something like that to fulfill the cities recreational needs?
I love the Flames, but this does not sound like a pragmatic use of taxpayer money. Maybe my opinion will change after the 2.30 presser, but I don't like dollar figures thrown out so far.

Honestly Clay, you are just being obtuse for the sake of it. It is well known that many acts skip Calgary because of limitations of the Saddledome. The problem here is that others have given you an excuse to be obtuse by incorrectly making it a "big name act" issue when it is actually an issue of the rigging for stages, special effects and the like and the Saddledome roof's inability to support those larger rigs.

And if Edmonton has a new arena, and Calgary has a new arena, and they can still only play one or the other....you're acting like a new arena guarantees Calgary never gets skipped again. Unless Calgary is renaming itself Toronto, it's still in line to get skipped.
|
Assuming it is an Edmonton or Calgary scenario is a ridiculous fallacy.

I meant not many will miss -30 degree playoff games. And at those instances, the roof can be closed.
I like stadiums where only the spectators are covered but the pitch isn't. Given Calgary's climate, I would at least prefer a retractable roof though instead of an open air stadium. Completely closed is not my cup of tea.

I love the idea of a roof, I just hope it's similar to the concept that they are using in Minneapolis with the new Vikings stadium where they utilize natural light during the day

Seriously? If a band has an opportunity to play to two 1,000,000 plus cities only 3 hours apart, I don't think that they'll skip either city. And no, they won't be pressed for time by the calendar as these tours are planned well in advance.

Turf only, to keep it fair all the way around.
Canada also hosted the U20, which I believe was multi-surface.

I was at the STH event and King made reference to the transparent membrane used for the new Vikings stadium. His initial concern was about how it would handle our winters. But he said since Minnesota has a similar winter he would keep the option on the table.

The last time Metallica came through town they still came but it was a "lesser" show than the rest of the tour. Their in the round stage had to be on one side of the arena and not in the middle and they had to leave out some of the pyro and other special effects due to limitations of the building.
I saw the show in Calgary and Edmonton and while not a big deal they got the full show up there where as Calgary was scaled back a bit.
