I don't have a problem with this funding model as described so far.

I do have a problem with a fixed roof stadium. Canadian summer sports should be outside. BC Place absolutely sucked until they changed it. Make it retractable roof and increase the ticket tax if necessary.

Field house should be funded by city. CFL stadium is for the city, not a lot of millionaires in CFL football. Cleanup should have been done decades ago and should not be paid by Flames owners. Most of the infrastructure around crowchild should have been done with public dollars long ago.

CRL and ticket tax is funded by people and businesses that directly enjoy/benefit from the facilities.

What it comes down to for me (in regards to public money being spent) is how quickly they can reach a point where this actually becomes a revenue-generator.
I would speculate that the deal would be similar to what the Flames and city have now.

CSE would manage the facilities and collect the revenue from all events. In exchange, they would pay the city a (nominal) flat annual fee and be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings.

I think people are going to be very disappointed that bands will still skip Calgary with a new building.

Rush just played Calgary and....not Edmonton. Pearl Jam played Calgary 2013...not Edmonton. Bands go to Calgary and not Edmonton a decent amount if you look hard enough.
Edmonton has a thousand year old area too at the moment...you think acts will be skipping their new arena and playing in the dome? not very often, obviously there are other factors like the schedule. Also the football stadium will host larger shows too.

The Flames won't survive long term without a new arena and if the Flames left the dome would be too expensive to operate just for the odd concert

Calgary NEEDS these facilities

Those examples might have been relevant 20 years ago.

The big, popular acts with their big stage shows never choose Calgary over Edmonton.

I would be willing to bet that the "stadium" being enclosed is not just weather related but also noise related. Remember when everyone around McMahon complained about the outdoor concerts?

Can we at least all agree that the new area should be called the "Scorch Memorial District"

1. No, not every other arena outside Edmonton is privately owned. Also, many of the ones that are privately owned were built primarily with public funds but given to the private owner.

2. Please learn how to use the quote function.

I think it will be a major drawback if the stadium roof isn't retractable. Even when the roof is open in BC Place, it feels like a dome. I personally don't like that.

Simple options available.
Or drive to the nearest train station and park for free at night....like a lot of us have been doing for 10 years now.

Surprised to see this comment a couple times. Is it that big of a deal? It pretty much makes the weather a non factor. As long as they can maintain good field conditions, I really don't see the drawback. Who's going to miss -30 degree CFL playoff games?

Actually its directly because of the roofs as I understand. The Saddledome roof cant handle the lights/speakers required and as such gets passed over.

Not many. But on a nice evening or warm day, spectators and players alike would want the field at the very least to be uncovered.

The value proposition makes more sensed to me to have a fixed roof. This city spend the majority of the year under cold weather and there are all the noise problems that McMahon has.

Retractable roofs all seem to have problems that cause maintenance and cost-overrun issues in the long-term but maybe technology has gotten better. There are also alternatives these days like open-roof systems that have more simplistic and reliable mechanisms.

And if Edmonton has a new arena, and Calgary has a new arena, and they can still only play one or the other....you're acting like a new arena guarantees Calgary never gets skipped again. Unless Calgary is renaming itself Toronto, it's still in line to get skipped.
