No it's not. Are we going to see an expansion of non-O/G industry all of a sudden branch into Calgary on a large scale in the next 10-15 years? Probably not. This city will continue to run on the "one-trick pony" for years to come yet, especially when times are good.
If you have an idea to fill those office towers, all . . . . . 30 of them, then you sir, are a genius.
Start with an arena, a stadium, a field house, a couple of small buildings, and work out from there. My guess is it's going to continue to be high-density residential more than anything else.
Also for the red arena - no, no no, absolutely no. THere's enough red on the inside where it counts, no need to stereotypically paint what should be nothing less than a landmark masterpiece in Canadian sports infrastructure with team colors. Absolutely not, no way. No. To me, that's almost as bad as the Cowboy hat arena.
NO.

Well I would assume that is the plan. It's not like they are are going to start construction on an arena, a stadium, and then 25 other buildings all at once.
Also you are going way overboard about the red. We are going to be getting a world class facility to go watch the Flames in and you're upset that it has a strip of red on it? That is is no way even close to being comparable to an arena shaped like a cowboy hat haha

But red matches our fancy new Peace Bridge. It only makes sense that everything by the bow is red!

The whole thing in that rendering is red, outside of the glass component. What rendering are you looking at?
Sorry fellas, but red on the outside is just cheesy and takes the class of something like this down a notch. Not even Edmonton was stupid enough to go with team colors to any discernible degree on the exterior envelope. I don't think I can think of many huge arena projects that have done it either.

Do you have an issue with the accentuating red on the Dome?

Keep in mind that they're not going to be building x number of office and apartment buildings right off of the bat so they can sit empty. These will be built in years to come as demand requires.
The team is wisely trying to sell this as a long-term vision for the whole area with development potential. It will take many years to reach that sort of density, and some of those buildings will never get built, plans will change, etc.

Adding some color to a stadium can enhance the look. Calm your horses Ozy.
Take this concept stadium in Qatar for instance. A few blue stripes and it looks very slick:
EDIT: this particular stadium might be a bad choice because it looks like a hoo-ha.

The energy business is cyclical and will continue to grow long term. Before the recent collapse office vacancy in downtown Calgary was very, very low and demand for quality office space was unsatisfied...which was driving up lease rates. The offices will come onto market slowly as demand requires over time. To say that we don't need more office space because vacancies are currently high during a recession is very short sighted.
Anyways the city wants a high street for W Village so I doubt there'll be as many office towers as that rendering has. My guess is that there will be some pretty significant condo buildings as well.

The same rendering that you are looking at, shocker. If you actually take a closer look it appears to just be a strip of red under the roof. You can't even see half of the building for crying out loud. Looks really sharp in my opinion and I think you are complaining about a non issue

Now that I look at it, yes I do take issue with it. It's old, it's very 1980's, and we don't have to have team colors (racing stripes if I may) painted on the outside to show that a great team plays in there. I'm surprised we haven't painted it to something more modern.

Some may think it is cheesy, but I wouldn't mind LEDs (like the Allianz Arena) where it can be lit up different colours for special occasions, or even just random colours.

Our city flag has red on it. Does it mean it uses team colors on the outside? There is plenty of red in our city. Saddledome, Calgary Tower, Peace Bridge and I'm sure there's more.
As for your earlier comment about other industries other than O&G, while heavily influenced by O&G, I know finance grew in this city, and logistics was supposed to grow immensely as well (note logistics hub in NE being built by the airport). We are supposed to be starting more international flights in a few years too but I believe direct flights to Dubai were scuttled.
This however would do nothing to fill additional office space in the down town area... but these buildings remind me of the NEB building on 5th street and 10th Ave which should easily be filled by small firms.

Told that the Flames will announce planned funding for the new project. But need to get public side to commit.

I wouldn't get too excited (good or bad) about this drawing - even if it is real. Looks to me like its just a vision of what it "might" look like. Much like the early drawings of the stadium in Regina. The end result ended up looking nothing like that. Probably the same case here. They probably haven't even hired an architect yet. I'm just hoping this creates a positive buzz in our city and we get it done right.
