That was very clearly stated in the invitation email. Perhaps you should have actually read it before inviting your other season ticket holder.

As long as you leave out the city going into massive debt over it! Dunedin (population 125000 if we're being generous) has had to cut back on a lot of essential services and infrastructure to pay for that white elephant that rarely ever gets filled.

Yup, I recall reading that there was some strong opposition to the stadium. Was it generally supported in the end or did the local Council just push it through?

Well, it cost the equivalent of $170mil CDN to build it, and Calgary has 1.2 million people, so if there's any issues with building a stadium like that it won't be population or cost.

I may be in the minority, but I don't like that Forsyth Stadium and would be disappointed if we went with something like that.
To me it looks like an eyesore from the outside (not the biggest deal I guess, but still, this will be built right beside the river and will become part of our downtown skyline, so not the same as a big clunky looking stadium being built outside of skyline shots).
It also looks kind of awkward and forced inside as well. I get the concept and appreciate the openness feeling, but I think there's way better ways of building an open air, indoor stadium than that.
Forsyth Barr kind of reminds me of an airplane hanger, it has a real warehousey feel to it.

^^^^^^^
In fact just imagining the above picture built into Calgary's downtown westside, it would almost be like transferring any number of huge, supply chain warehouses from our industrial area into what should be a beautiful arena district, only with a clear roof in some areas.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the aesthetics and design (e.g edges, massing and flow) but I really like the concept (i.e. open and naturally lit). Rather than looking at this stadium as a blueprint, I'd hope the Flames Organization would look at it as a launching point.

It looks like a giant greenhouse.
I also don't like the break up of the different sections with big corner walls like that. That's the one thing I don't like about the design of the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota too.

Yeah, the square corners look like it was built on a shoe-string budget. I agree with the airport hangar reference.
My expectations may be too high, but I am looking for something a lot more dazzling than that

I hope they build an entertainment district and hotel with the arena. That'd be a great place for out of towners to visit when making a trip for a game.

I think we can already expect it especially when a project indicates live|work|play in its motto

Mock Up design
So i took the cities WV ARP designs this afternoon and drew a little mock up of what I would do if I were the Flames.
I'd put the arena where Shaw Millenium park currently is and the only place I could see fitting the stadium while being able to maintain a open concept village type design with traffic integration is putting the stadium at the river front by Pumphouse Theatre.

^^ traffic is going to be terrible for that. I really hope the plans on Tuesday reveal a rework of the roads.

Is Shaw Millenium Park even going to be part of the redeveloped area? I thought everything would be going west of 14th Street.

yes. The city wants to remove the skate park and just lay a bunch of sod and make it an open green space from what I understand. But yes everything from the Science centre right to Pumphouse theater is the area in question for west village redevelopment.

This isn't serious is it? I mean nothing surprises me with this city, but that's a world class skate park, when it was built it was actually the biggest skate park in North America.
So they want to just remove it in favor of green space? That seems fifth level stupid to me, but I guess I'm not in their world so maybe they see it differently.

Also they would be urbanized blvd's like downtown. So i believe it would be 3 or 4 lanes going east down 9th and west down 8th. 14th would be brought up to level with 8th and 9th and some sort of circle interchange system. The biggest thing sitll would be crowchil for North-South connections and wether they do anything to alleviate that stress on traffic flow.
