None of those things even compare to the NEP. The NEP destroyed Calgary. Absolutely destroyed it. See this growth in Calgary you see now? Rewind 25 years ago. That's how it was like back then. Then imagine the Liberals coming in and stopping it cold. Hell, there were buildings in construction that just... stopped. Some of those shells were still shells until the late 90s.

Just how old... are you?

At least it would be better than Rob Anders.

Didn't someone post a pic of that rabbit here. I searched but couldn't find it.

Yup. I was very young at the time but if you talk to anyone that was around at that time and they will tell stories of hard working folks having to walk away from their homes and what not. The bitterness from all of that runs VERY deep among many Albertans.

That combined with the perception that the provincial money transfers skew HEAVILY away from Alberta by giving "our" money to the poor provinces, and you've got a place that's insanely anti-Liberal.

I know all that. But like the bolded part says, 'just how old am I.' Well not everyone in Calgary is old enough to remember the NEP, meaning there 'must' be other issues that still keeps Calgary a dominate conservative base.

That being said, I had a social teacher that hated the Liberals because of the NEP, and never forgot to tell us every single day what they did. So I guess in a certain way, even though I wasn't alive when the NEP happened, I am anti-Liberal in some ways because of it.

More anti-Trudeau though.

That's parents keeping their kids scared with tales of the Liberal boogeyman.

But those things you mentioned have very little to do with Liberals never gaining power here. It's all about the NEP. Calgary was painted blue long before Chretien was elected.

Calgary has been traditionally conservative for years before the NEP. This may have had something to do with Trudeau's attitude to Alberta since he wouldn't lose any seats anyways. Those were extremely tough times for me and nobody complained about rush hour traffic because there wasn't any.

I don't want to veer away from the discussion of Rob Anders, but isn't it a bit puzzling to be anti-liberal in 2006 because of a failed policy program from 30 years ago? Nobody thinks it was a good idea now--and the Liberals are no more the party of the NEP in 2006 than the Conservatives are the party of the GST. It would be like not voting NDP because I never trusted that Tommy Douglas guy.

I actually was a casual acquaintance/friend of Rob's when I was at the U of C. Fun guy--but my impression was always that he was a slight lunatic, and not particularly well suited for higher office. My opinion hasn't changed.

Well the NEP was a huge kick to the balls of many Albertans. The GST didn't make people lose their jobs and houses.

I always thought the Liberals always had at least a chance to win more than one seat in Alberta before the NEP. Now they don't have any chance at all (except for those crazy Edmontonians )

Did Rob Ander's ever have any female acquaintences?

I couldn't vote for Anders in the last election - so I just didn't vote. I can't stand that guy, and if he is up for re-election, then as much as I hate the Liberals, they will get my protest vote.

I wish there was a "none of the above" option on ballots. Why, there'd be two or three people in Parliament then!

I remember there was one ugly one downtown. I believe it was the SW corner, at 5th Ave and 9th ST SW. Lots of people had to drive past it every day for years and cringe.
