What does Minnesota get? A Noris Calibre defenseman that can either play with Suter, or carry his own pair. The strong finish Minnesota had to its season just might make them want to go all in, at least for one season.
It would probably have to be done in the beginning of the season, and/or include conditional picks based on if Gio will resign. Not sure what will each team have to add on their side.

That was one of the best suggestions I've seen on this thread yet. Something in it for both sides. This could happen. Kind of along the lines of most good deals hurt, though.

Depends how close you think you are to the cup. We traded Brett Hull for Ramage and Wamsley and I doubt you'd find many complaints.

That was a different era though. The way the NHL is today a younger player who has shown a lot of promise has a ton of value. Honestly I wouldn't be opposed to the deal but I'm a bit skeptical Minnesota would make the deal. Maybe if they were that concerned that they had to make a run right away but without any insurance on re-signing Gio that is a very risky move that I doubt they would make.

I agree with you, but it will have to be a great deal for the Flames to make it. Players like Brodin(MIN), Lindholm(ANA), Muzzin(LA), Leddy(NYI), Josi(NSH), or Klingberg(DAL) would have to be the cornerstone of a deal in my opinion.

At what point does the lack of signed contract become a distraction? It's almost August and still nothing.
I think if there is nothing by camp, then it's a distraction.

If Gio isn't signed by Christmas, then it becomes a distraction. That's when IMO you'll start hearing rumors, rumblings, media asking Gio every day.

I agree with CroFlames. I suspect hardcore fans on CP will be calm and will show contempt for anyone that shows any concern if he's not signed by the start of the season.
But the reality is if he goes into game 1 without a contract extension, you'll see the media start up the concern train (likely Eric Francis will get things rolling) and then the casual fanbase will jump on board, at which point Gio will start getting pestered all the time and it will become a distraction.
It sucks, but it's the nature of star players not signing a contract before the final season of their current one. It's a distraction literally every time it's happened, so Gio will be no different.

Ah ****, just realized this was the hypothetical trade thread. Right after I made a sarcastic post about how no one's paying attention to the OP and thread title, lol.

Why would any of those teams trade one of those players for Gio?
I just don't see a team trading a young stud defenceman for an old stud defenceman

A team wouldn't trade a young stud for an old stud, but they might trade a blue chip likely to be stud, for a right now actual stud if they felt the timing right.
(I wouldn't consider myself versed enough in other teams young guys to say if they qualify)

Because he was/is a top 5 defenseman in the league. The younger stud defenseman are not (or not yet). He can give a team a significant performance boost at least for 1 season, which can be a very attractive option.
Let me ask you a counter question - Why would the Flames trade him for anything less? Especially considering that they have loaded up their team to try and go further than the 2nd round next season.

Wouldn't mind getting Trouba out of the 'peg. Pretty calm, collected and only 20-odd years old. Guy will be an animal in a couple years.

I don't see a team selling the future of a young stud D man for an older one who is likely more expensive and not guaranteed to play a high level game for more than a year or 2 more. Unless said team is not very high on their player.
Your second point is absolutely correct. But if a team calls and asks about Gio, it will likely be futures and a lesser roster player. That's usually how these trades work for 1 year rental players. Not saying the flames would take it though.

Gio is a bit of a unique situation though. Only a $4.02 million deal for an elite defenceman/captain.
I think that adds a premium to the asking price since it lets a team acquire Gio at an incredible salary, and negotiate their own deal with him once said salary expires.

Sure, but I for one don't think it makes up the difference for a young stud D man. Maybe another 1st/2nd round pick

That was regarding Brodin, but the same logic applies.

Once again, I agree with you. However, you also need to consider that most of those trades are made with teams that are not going to make the playoffs. In many cases it is a team simply trying to salvage something out of a season, or going into a rebuild. The Flames' goal going into this season seems a bit different than that.

It does if you're going all in for the cup. But that is the only reason a team might do it.
Edit: and that's why the Brodin proposal made sense - with Parise and Suter, Minny might be a team that looks at it and says 'let's go all in, right now'

I have heard Treliving say more than once that Gio deal is a priority for the summer and they want it done by training camp. My gut feel is they get a deal done before camp and it may be an overpayment for some fan's tastes (including mine). I might be overvaluing cap flexibility vs. most people so that is my bias. I think they ride the season with what they have and assuming we are in a playoff position, they keep Hudler and Rusell through the deadline and let them walk at end of year. To me that is the cost of a Gio contract but I believe they value him that much.

Yeah, Giordano being signed is almost a certainty IMO.
I still think the Flames are sellers at the deadline.
Jones
Hudler (maybe, if the season is going poorly, or someone like Poirier makes a huge jump)
Byron
one of the goalies (if they're still both here)
Russell (very small chance)

And we should be sellers next year as well, with
Wideman
Engelland
Bollig
Stajan
The Flames are in spectacular shape, IMO
