Could a gym teacher split up a classroom of kids into dodgeball teams based on skin-colour?

alright here are the contestants..
I suppose the teams could be even... I'm guessing that this photo has:
Latinos top left, Blacks top right, Whites bottom left and Asians bottom right.
I guess it is even...

Great picture. I don't know how this show works, but I'm cheering for the guy in the skull shirt.

haha at first glance your right. But that strange looking white chick is my favourite and here's why:
http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivo..._jessica.shtml
Her name is Jessica Smith;
"Smith is a performance artist and designer. As a performance artist, she does various fire-related performances using fire hula hoops, poi, staff and batons…often times on stilts. She has participated in California's Burning Man Festival for the last eight years, as well as continually performing all over the state of California.
Most recently, Smith was a Nor Cal Roller girl who went by the name "Flicka Flame." She was also the team captain of the undefeated Roller Derby Team titled "VooDoo Dolls," where she also designed the uniforms and was the artistic coordinator of the theme (she named the team and created the theatrics). She is also an all-star member of "Hustlers." "
You can't even make this stuff up. Gold.

Ok... so where's the fundamental difference? It is wrong to divide school kids or company picnic goers based on colour, but ok to divide Survivors based on colour? I'm not sure I get why one is allowed and the other isn't.

I have a feeling the "segregated" teams are going to last less than one episode. They'll start separated, do a challenge, and then there'll be player swaps.

No worries. I'm going to be watching it, and hopefully I'll be a poolie (and my Survivor will beat yours down... I'm picking the La Raza looking guy ).
But I still don't get the difference. Why is it ok on this show, but not in a school classroom or company picnic?

Because its TV not a learning or work environment.

I will say this...I think if CBS crosses a line it will be in how they market this. How do they do it without playing up a "Which Race is Superior" type angle? I'm very curious to see how they handle the marketing.

So, racial segragation is ok on TV, but not in learning or work environments, just because. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with that... still doesn't seem to be a fluid logic to me though.

If there's a pool I get Flicka Flame hands down no questions.
I was even pondering asking a mod to change my name to Flicka Flame this afternoon- right up until I found out my name was the nickname of a baseball legend. I'm awesome.
As if a girl who hula hoops fire and roller derbies doesn't destroy everyone. You heard it here first.

Well, one thing's for sure..........CBS wanted to liven up their show, and it looks like they'll accomplish that. I've heard lots of people and some radio stations talking about it already, and pretty much everyone has said "I'm going to watch it."
All I know is if that guy with the skull shirt is a Latino, then I'm cheering for the Latinos all the way!!

This is not racial discrimination.
They're not giving one team an advantage over another team.
Would it make you feel better if they were drawing names out of a hat and it ended up this way?
