Now there an interesting proposal at the deadline if the Flames aren't in playoff contention.

Yandle fetched Duclair, a 1st and a 2nd (yeah there were some other minor parts but that was the meat of the trade). I think he would get more then that, especially because even as a rental he is cheap like borscht when it comes to his cap hit. I could even see a similar return that St. Louis netted TB.

Some of these posts are lowballs, the other team would get a top (possibly Norris) defenceman for a full year at a 2-4M cap hit. He would bring more than other recently traded defencemen like Coburn or Sekera. A 1st, A very good prospect + another prospect or a 2nd would be the bare minimum.

Would we even want to trade Gio to a division rival like the Ducks? If they did I would expect a seller's ransom for that deal.

This was the example I was going to quote. And that was for a deadline UFA.

Giordano is far more valuable than Yandle.

It would be a 1st + a top prospect + another pick or lower prospect.

Trading Giordano for a 1st + a decent prospect is a joke.

Huntingwhale: your examples of Iginla and Bouwmeester have two problems:

1) neither of those players were as desirable as Giordano would be right now, and

2) Feaster got fleeced on both those deals.

I liked Feaster overall but he was a lousy trader - couldn't get full value.

2016 First
2016 Second
Matthew Barzal
Anthony Beauvillier
2017 Second

I could live with something like that.

Giordano's return would likely consist of a current veteran player who is on the down swing of his career/cap dump, but who is still a capable player; a blue chip prospect on the verge of making the NHL (probably a defenseman to offset the loss of Gio); and a top 10 first round pick. Anything less than that wouldn't be enough to replace a player of Gio's calibre, regardless of any NMCs or contract status.

Exactly. Anything (significantly) less than that and the Flames are better off simply keeping Giordano for one more year and risking that he walks.

I would rather have one more year with Giordano (worst case scenario, and very unlikely) than trading him for a mid 1st and a B prospect.

My guess is if the flames end up trading Gio it would be closer to the deadline. This is after flames management know they have exhausted every avenue to try and re-sign Gio. If it comes to having to trade Gio you take the best offer you can get no matter which team it is. Gio would be a UFA a couple of months later and could end up signing with a division rival anyway.

I'm with the posters that think if he is traded, that the return would be at least what Yandle got in return for Arizona. It would suck trading Gio, but i would take a trade anyday of the week over a 7-8 year big money contract.

Jakub Vrana or Madison Bowey + 2016 first + Michael Latta.

Something like that I imagine.

Maybe not 100% the same, but ROR also only had a year on his deal when the Avs dealt him and they got a huge return for him.

Now having said that, it is summer, and trade speculation is always entertaining and good for generating discussion (for better or for worse)...

If Gio's present contractual status were to lead to an impasse, and we were going to consider moving him before or during this season... what kind of return might we see?
no.

Treliving said he wanted to get Gio signed to a new contract before the start of the season to keep it from becoming 'a distraction'. I think it's already a distraction for CP!

It's interesting how much people think the Flames would get low-balled.

Every single player in the NHL has two parts to him when evaluating his trade value.

1. His ability.
2. His contract.

Trading Gio if he was making $7.5 or $8 would net a return probably similar to what Iggy fetched, roughly speaking.

Trading Gio at $4.02 would net a great return. A roster player, a good prospect, & a high 1st.

How many of us on here during the Kessel rumors said "hell, I'd take a chance at Kessel if he was making $4 mil, but at $8 mil, no bueno". Luongo probably would have had 25 teams lined up to trade for him, but his albatross contract handcuffed too many clubs.

I'm not advocating a trade right now for Gio, but the Flames played well without Gio the last 25 games, plus we acquired Hamilton. If there is a deal to be made, Treliving has to do it.

As the saying goes, its the dog days of summer. We need stuff to talk about.

We should be thanking Gio and his agent for giving us stuff to talk about! Ha.

Retain as much as possible and send him to Philly for their 1st rounder and Jakub Voracek.

Now that would be sweet. Hilariously unlikely but hey, maybe for some reason they ask Sweeney to cover for Hextall while is on vacation or something, kind of like the time they made Homer the Captain of a Nuclear Submarine on his first day.

"Can we trust the GM of a rival team to GM our team while Ron's on vacation?"

"Sure...what could go wrong?"

A 1st rounder, someone within the top 3 of the prospect depth pool and a roster player to fill his spot
