No room for Raymond, Shore, Arnold, Byron or Poirier

I hope that Frolik clearly is substantially better than the guys he is bumping.

If Ferland isn't on the opening day roster and loses his spot in the exhibition games I am pretty sure he would consider it a set back after being one of the Flames best forwards in the playoffs.

Ferland needs a new contract. Pretty sure hes looking for a one way deal. Will stay up unless he has a bad camp

Poirier will stay up unless he has a bad camp

Wow this exercise really drove home the point of our forward surplus. Although guys like Ferland and Granlund can be sent down, they were both dressing for games when they mattered most in the playoffs last year. Assuming the goal is to win as many games as possible in the regular season, hard to see them being sent down in favor of a guy like Shore who did not crack the lineup much in the post peason.

There is probably no forward on the Flames in need of a better off season and training camp than Shore. He needs to win an NHL job. Not so much that there is a risk of being claimed, but he has already proven successful at the AHL level and his NHL window will start to close at some point. We heard he was "blocked" at Florida because of their depth. Well there is no open position waiting for him in Calgary. He will have to beat out an NHLer to win one.

I hope he has a huge camp and makes it.

Ferland has substantially more upside. It isn't close.

If Treliving traded Ferland for Jooris, I would lose my mind.

Well obviously Ferland has way more upside than a 30 year old player, but if Michael Ferland followed the same career trajectory as David Jones (sans injury) I don't think anyone would be complaining. David Jones is what we hope Ferland becomes, a ~20 goal scorer.

And Ferland probably does have higher upside than Jooris, however Jooris is more versatile than Ferland and fills a clear need which is right shooting right wingers.

I picked Byron , Jooris and Shore over Raymond, Bollig and Granlund. Saying that i can't see anybody taking Raymond off our hands. He will replace one of the 3 I picked for pressbox duties. I could also see Granlund making it over Shore but i think Granlund has to become a winger.

Is this meant to be an assessment of who we think will be on the opening day roster, or who we'd like to see?

This distinction becomes important when it comes to guys like Raymond and Bollig...

It also kind of depends on asset management potential for some players.

As I mentioned, I think Stajan might have some pretty good value and if we could get something good for him, I would like to see him moved somewhere where he can contribute more and to make room on the 4th line for some internal competition.

But I don't want to give him away either. If there is no trade to be had, then I would much rather see him on the team again in October.

It will be really interesting to see what Treliving does to thin out the herd going into camp. I think the top 11 on the list are highly likely to be on the opening night roster. That would leave probably 3 spots for the next 7 guys to fight for (I'm excluding the bottom 3 on the list.) All 7 are probably NHLers, though I think Poirier would need an outstanding camp given how easy it is to send him down. Same may go for Granlund, whom I believe is still able to go down without waivers.

Only think one of Poirier, Arnold or Klimchuk make the team out of preseason, but think all three have roster spots by season's end. Also, Agostino not being on the list is odd since I think he stands a good chance of making the team as well.

Would like to see guys like Stajan, Raymond and Bolig moved to make room for younger players pushing their way up. Kept Stajan on the opening day roster as he's the only one of the three I wouldn't mind keeping around.

hopefully jones is sent off for a glencross like package around the deadline. Then his spot is filled by a young guy come playoffs (poirier/agostino/etc...). I think thats the perfect way to rebuild.

It's great to see Colborne getting such strong vote.
Tells me that the hate he seemed to be getting earlier was from a vocal but small group.

A few things:

Surprised to see Bollig get over 100 votes at this point. I figured people would want him gone.

Also surprised to see people so quick to turn on Raymond. I'm not saying he's a better option than anyone on this list, but he is still a veteran NHL scoring, speedy winger. He might have a bounce back year.

I went with everyone on the list down to Ferland, and then picked Jooris, Granlund, and Byron as my last picks. I still really like the versatility with all three of those players, not only up and down the lineup, but at center or wing, and both wings in Byron's case. I wouldn't be upset to see those three cycle in and out of the lineup all year.

I did not pick Shore, only because he didn't seem to fit in the system last year, but I will happily change my vote if he looks like he belongs more in preseason this year.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Hudler
Colborne - Backlund - Frolik
Bouma - Stajan - Jones
Ferland - Bennett - Jooris
Shore, Byron

Not really seeing room for Granlund unless we move Jones. Bollig and Raymond need to go. And we can't put Shore back down in the AHL. Ferland, Granlund can.

I think the issue that prevented Hartley from playing him more was his conditioning. It wasn't quite up to scratch when he joined the team, he was huffing and puffing and ran out of gas a lot. So if he puts him some solid offseason work before training camp on cardio, he can have a good showing in camp and can potentially beat out players like Byron and Jooris for NHL spots.
