If he wants the money it needs to be 4 or fewer years. If he wants the term it needs to be 6 or less $... But the Flames shouldn't give him the term either way.
I know, it's below market. The market is idiotic. Let someone else screw their next GM over five years from now.

I would be all-in for a $7MM AAV x 5yr deal for Gio - over to Tre the Wizard to make it so!

Agreed. Any of those three would be fair for both sides.

I'd wait until December to re-sign, let the injury risk play itself out a bit before signing a massive deal like this.

And this gives the Flames some time to see how his last injury may affect his play. I'm sure his grit and foot-speed won't have changed at all but who knows if he is able to handle the puck as well or if his shooting and passing may be impacted as well

Then we would be enjoying the 1st round pick + good prospects we got for him prior to him leaving via free agency.
We won't let Gio walk for nothing.

The Flames or Giordano don't want this to linger, he'll be signed by September. One injury could kill the Flames ability to trade him if need be and also cost Gio tens of millions of dollars potentially. Too much at risk here, it'll definitely get done before the season starts. It would also be a huge distraction that I'm sure Treliving doesn't want hanging over the team's heads for months.

It's relevant to consider what other top defencemen would be UFAs at the same time as Gio and what they'd be worth. Sure Gio's getting older, but that's the nature of UFAs. I think he'd command at least what the highest proposals on here are. What would the Oilers pay to get a guy like him? Or LA (assuming they now have cap room if Voynov and Richards come off the books).

I don't think any team can expect to be a contender for the cup while paying $9 million to a defenseman in his mid to late 30's. If Giordano really wants that kind of money he will mostly have to go to a bad team with a lot of cap space. I don't even see the Oilers doing it. They would be in cap hell in a few years.

But you also have to keep in mind that there is a huge difference between being a UFA at 27 and at 33. Physiologically, Giordano should be through his prime by the time his current contract expires. If he really wants to get paid BIG, he needs to sign 1 and 2 year contracts like Lidstrom. As long as he is healthy and a top 5 defenseman, he will get his 10 million every year...

I totally agree, the only issue being that unlike Lidstrom Gio hasnt gotten paid yet. Those were practically bonus years for Lidstrom, Gio still has to hit payday.
Realistically speaking, if you're at the top of your game you want 1 year deals every year so that you can always demand more. Thats assuming a lot of confidence regarding never getting injured.

His last contract paid him a total of just over 20 million dollars. I think the guy got paid. He ended up performing at a level that exceeded the contract, but when he signed that extension he was essentially a #4 defenceman who'd never put up more than 30 points in a single NHL season. The Flames extended the right guy at the right time and got fantastic value.
The key on this deal, is to not back pay him for too many years on this next one.
