Giordano Extension. Kypreos: Starting point is $72 million over 8 years
I think in the end it will be something like 6 years at $8 million per season.

If you agree to pay him 14 million year 1 and have a deal at the time of signing to next year give him 20 million over the next 4 years you are doing it to get around the rule that the cap is averaged for the length of the deal hence it's cap circumvention.
If Gio doesn't have this guarantee it's not cap circumvention but as others why would he take the risk if he doesn't have something to ensure he gets the next deal.

Because they made a different choice. Maybe they really value what Sharp brings to the team. Maybe they weren't all that enamoured with Saad. Lots of possibilities.

Because long term they don't see the value in paying a 52-point "third best player on his line" the same money Carey Price makes?

Could do a backroom deal where if his career is over he gets a "community ambassador" role for $20 MM over 4 years or something like that. Gio could make sure he gets the money by mentioning that if they don't pay it, every big RFA/UFA on the market gets a call from a former Flames captain explaining how they screwed him.
I agree it would work a lot better for the Flames if they could overpay gio for this year and maybe next year, and then have his cap hit reduce once he's ~35 and we need the $$ for the young guys. Maybe a 20 year, $22 MM deal with a handshake for a $18MM/3 year deal after? That works out to $40MM over 5 years with a much friendlier cap structure to the Flames.

Someone asked earlier why players have agents. It is to stop a player from accepting any of these back room deals!

The Hawks probably tried to move guys like Bickell and Sharp but the deals just wern't there or were very poor. They might have ran out of time and feared Saad might get offered sheeted so decided to go the safe route and deal him and get a package they liked as opposed to picks where you have no idea where they will be coming from. I think keeping Saad was their first priority but circumstances changed and they had to make the best of things.

That's clear cap circumvention and would carry massive fines and penalties from the league, no doubt.
No NHL team would consider this.

Anything more then 4/5 years @ 6.5 they should move him. I love Gio but he is not worth Keith, Suter, Chara & Doughty money. His worth to the Flames is no greater then the guys I mentioned. He cannot be paid more then guys who have won cups and Norris trophies.

Treliving on "Tim and Sid" right now. He plans to get Giordano done before training camp. He does a lot more than what we see on the ice.
Other priorities are the players who filed for arbitration. He also talked about filling depth such as at defence (Hamilton) and RW (Frolic). He believes in building from the defence out and he didn't sound like he was done making moves yet, saying there are still a few months to go. My guess is he tries to do something at the goalie position.
They started off the conversation by stating that hockey is a team sport and how much could one player do for a team, citing the new guy up north. Probably looking for Treliving to say something newsworthy against McDavid but Treliving didn't bite.

$6.5 isn't realistic. Things are different now.
Suter for instance signed what is now an illegal contract. 13 years and back diving.
Over his first ten years before it goes down to $2 million per season, Suters contract averages $9.4 million per year....
Keith's deal was signed 4 years ago now and his first 9 years are at $6.9 million which was probably team friendly at the time.
Doughty's contract was half RFA years and is still $7.
Chara's is another back diving contract that lasts until he is 40. The first year is $8.5 million.
When most of these guys signed contracts the cap was also under $65 million.

Suter never won a Cup or Norris...
Anyways, I took a look at the five players' last six years production. Salary numbers are for the next four seasons, so 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18- and 2018-19 and in Chara's case he expires in 2018.
Code:
Player GP Points PPG +/- Salary Average Post-CBA?
Gio 397 210 0.53 27 ? ? Yes
Keith 444 287 0.65 85 23 5.75 No
Doughty 443 240 0.54 55 29.8 7.45 No
Chara 428 219 0.51 124 16 5.33 No
Suter 438 235 0.54 63 36 9.00 No
I think you can argue that Gio's production was very similar, the "pedigree" or "durability" not so much.
On average, the salary of those four players comes down to 6.9 Million.
I think that's exactly what Gio is worth for the next four years.
He makes 4M next year, so to get him in line with that value you'd have to eat an average value of 7.9M for the three years after.
Adding a two more years of term @ 6M to drop the cap hit and you're right back down to around 35M / 5 years.
I think that's the contract we need to sign Gio to. AAV of 7M
