Will this affect other contract negotiations? I'm thinking for Monahan in particular

I think this could be bad for them in three years.

Eichel and Reinhart will need new contracts then and if they live up to their draft billing will likely have passed O'Reilly on the depth chart by then.

Going to be hard to get those guys to take a discount when they are outperforming the guy making $7.5 million.

Don't think his fellow NHLPA members and teammates are going to be a huge fan when they are looking at their Escrow reduced payments and he is laughing at his contract.

These are ROR's UFA years. Monahan's next contract will include 4 RFA years.

Unless Monahan scores 75+ points next season, doubtful his contract will come close.

Worst contract of the off season thus far.

He's gotta be the most overpaid player in the NHL now? For those making more than 5mil anyway.

Oh right, my mistake. It still makes sense if Buffalo has a tight salary budget to work under though.

This guy may not get another contract. This is the type of Wade Redden contract where the team eventually finds a sneaky way to run the guy out of the league. You look at teams like LA or Pittsburgh this guy is pretty even with their #3 center and he is making superstar money.

it's a lot of money, no question. But the one thing you can say is that it covers the meat of his career - it takes him through what? 24-31

This is Phil Kessel salary bad, holy balls. Not even close to what he brings to a team.

Credit where credit is due, you nailed the terms.

So, if they were to trade him, could they only retain up to $0.50 of his annual salary?

Deals like this and the Saad one certainly won't help the Flames cause as Monahan is likely going to be a better player than ROR when he gets to the same age.

Holy crap, is ROR really that good or is Sabres just NO GOOD? If the Sabres are done rebuilding, they really have 5 years before they become bust again.

The way the markets going, in a few years this won't look so bad. However right now no he's not quite worth 7.5M. About 1M - 500k too much

League should quash this contract for circumventing, this contract takes money right out of other players pockets as well.

If I was a GM I would be so reluctant to sign anyone for more than 4 years. Cap flexibility and being able to react to changing trends seem so important.

I do see that getting players like Brodie and Faulk locked in for a long period at a good cap hit can also be beneficial. Chicago is loving Keith at 5.5. But will they be in 2022? It seems unlikely.

And you can't just say that the cap will keep going up by big amounts. This year has proven that.

I know UFAs have a lot of power in negotiations but if I was a GM I'd try to keep everything under 5.

I love Giordano but 5 years is the absolute maximum I want to see on his extension.

Sometimes I know what I'm talking about. Just sometimes, though.

This contract really isn't as horrible as everyone is making out. If he progresses to a Patrice Bergeron level player it will be about right on (which is possible, the guy's only 24). If he continues on at his current level he will be overpaid by what, $1 million at most? If he regresses it will be bad, but one can say that about any contract.

And there is no budget in Buffalo. Pretty sure Pegula wipes his bottom with $100 bills.

Terrible contract. He's a second line Centre.

I think Buffalo is rushing things.

Stamkos is going to get 15 million a season at this rate.
