So he only makes 1.2 less per year than Crosby. The deals end around the same time.

Sabres extend Ryan O'Reilly long term (7 years, 52.5 million)
Can't see how the NHL lets this stand... Escrow circumvention...

Have to think the Escrow thing would be a bigger issue for the NHLPA.
Could mean a bigger escrow for the remainder of the Union.
Also makes the contract buyout proof as you get no savings on the bonus.

Buffalo still need D in a big way, they might be in on Franson and/or Oduya. But that team has a top 6 now:
Moulson - O'Reilly - Ennis
Kane - Eichel - Gionta (long term = Reinhart)

Escrow protection that takes money from almost every other player in the league. Surprised there isn't something in the CBA about that.

Which is a great big FU to the rest of the players in the league.

Clarkson did the same structure - essentially makes you buyout proof! Good for players who know teams won't like the contract in a year or two!

Right on where I was expecting -- It's a bit of an overpayment but they were going to sign him after trading for him and knew he was after big money. I'm not THRILLED with it but at least it locks him up, I am happy that it's long term. He would've got that or more as a UFA.

honestly, if you think ROR is an elite #1 C, then this contract is bang on
if you think ROR is a talented #2 C, then this contract is laughable.
I'm in the #2 C camp.

My prediction is that this will be the next albatross contract to haunt a team. No way I see ROR living up to that kind of expectation
SO glad Feaster wasn't able to saddle our franchise with this boat anchor

You're not going to sign someone like ROR to a long term deal with a franchise like Buffalo unless you pay top dollar. ROR is also someone who has been known to go for the money above all else. What you have here is the conditions for a perfect storm of poor money management. This contract is way too long and way too expensive, especially when you consider the term. I guarantee this will be an anchor to the Sabres franchise about halfway through this contract.
Full disclosure, I'm really not a big ROR fan. He's never really impressed me a lot.

So glad that offer sheet didn't work out. Even if the Flames won the arbitration and got to keep RoR that is crazy money for a weak first liner or excellent second liner.

Yiesh.
This guy finds a way to get paid well above his peers every time.
I doubt he lives up to this contract. He has most likely reached his peak offensively already.

I get what Feaster was trying to do to improve the team, but RoR just strikes me as someone who isnt a team player and as such not someone that you can really win with.
He obviously doesnt give a crap about hamstringing his team with a contract like that. I love to see what his agent's justifications are for that contract.

So O'Reilly will make 11 million the season after this one? Is that most in the league?
Smart by Buffalo to have it front loaded though, so they'll be able to extend Eichel.

Yikes that is alot of money. No wonder the Avs traded him.
His past performance doesn't justify that salary, he'll need to be putting up 20 more points a year for that contract to start to make sense.

Worst contract handed out in the past week by a long shot. Nothing else even close. Makes the Oilers 6x6 contracts (Hall, Eberle, Nuge) look like value signings.

Front loading has no impact on the overall cap hit
