Who cares what the early numbers are being reported as. All that matters is the final number the contract is signed for, and I'm confident that it will get done at a number that makes everyone happy.
This. Treliving has proved over and over that he can do whatever the hell he wants. Brodie & Frolik under 4.6mil when both were rumored to have been north of 5+. Hamilon for 5.75 when everyone would have been happy with 7.

I think Treliving has everyone on board that we have a good thing going with this team and we're going to need 'discounts' from everyone so there is room to fit everyone in.

Call me optimistic, but I honestly think Gio will sign for less then 7mil/yr.

And if the Flames countered with 3 years at $4 mil per year, would that be honest negotiation or inflammatory?

We would likely get in the same ballpark as what the Leafs did for Kessel if we dealt him.

3 years at 4 million is smaller than his current contract. Not a fair comparison at all.

Gio is a lot closer to someone like PK Subban than he is to someone like Luke Schenn.

Get a grip.

Since that would never happen, its a moot point.

Like I said earlier....Treliving looks at the initial ask and comes back at 5 years at 6 million...do you honestly think that Gio or winter would take offense to that? Or, as is the process, do you think they would counter at 7 years and 8 million (or something similar) and understand this is a process that can take some time?

You're right, 3 years x 4M would be a ridiculous offer, just as ridiculous as 8 years x 9M.

Whatever the case trade him before it becomes a distraction (not saying now but in the season)...

This is a gong show in the making. Reminds me of some of the Meehan negotiations with Iginla. Agent was a nut job.

They should exhaust every possible option before trading Giordano as the Flames will almost certainly not get equal value back.

Cripes people need to relax. It is early days in the negotiation. No indication that this is turning into a "gong show" at all.

There is no deadline for this negotiation, and so its natural that they be far apart at this juncture.

The magic number for me is 42M

Gio can dictate term, but the Flames will focus on total $$.

5yr @ 8.4M
6yr @ 7M
7yr @ 6M
8yr @ 5.25M

Why would the player ever not take the shortest deal for the same money?

Personally, I think it's more ridiculous. Whatever, these are just rumors and by speculating people are now just worked up over a problem that might not even exist

We have a year to sign Gio. Let's not get in a panic. The two sides will come to a fair deal, I have no doubt. Gio loves being a Flame and I expect he'll stay with the organization when he retires.

sounds like the initial ask was a signal: this is going to be a long contract negotiation

Not much more than a 'tough stance' for an opening posistion.

Based on Treliving's other contracts, the man was made for business (good stock I guess) and I can expect him to be hard to negotiate with. Hence the 'tough stance' to begin with. But I think it'll turn out alright in the end, both parties want to get a deal done and that's the first and most important step.

Exactly. If one side comes in with a ridiculous offer what precludes the opposite side from doing the same?

Side A: "I want a Gajillion dollars!!"

Side B: "I'll offer you three buttons, this semi-digested kernel of corn and 10 minutes inside Billy Dee Williams' house."

For 5 years which is probably more term than he would have been satisfied with.

Giordanos agent is asking for both way too much term and too much money.

Giordano doesn't even have an NTC for his last season, so it's not like he has great leverage here.

Not that I put this on Giordano, I'm sure he's letting his agent handle it.
