I'm not sure where else to put this but ROR had 8 years / 64M (8M AAV) as his starting point in contract negotiations, now obviously that would have went down when all is said and done but it sounds like some plays are asking too much $ lately.

Penguins, like other teams are in trade mode today. If a deal is made likely takes then out of ufa market. Nothing imminent.

wondering if Tree could swoop in to those team looking at Dion and offer Wideman and get a good return, cheaper, put up more points, less term, seems like a no brainer for the other teams involved.

Why not go for a Stanley Cup this year. What's the worst that can happen? we have to make some trades to move out some of our depth and replace them with the top end of our prospects in Stockton. I don't see that as being a problem.

Engelland possesses an element in his game that no one else on the blueline has and one the Flames are already lacking in throughout the lineup.
If you are truly thinking that the Flames can compete for a cup anytime soon, then you have to remember how they got bounced last year by Anaheim. They were dominated physically. Calgary needs guys like DE on the ice, not sitting in the press box if they want to push back against a team like the Ducks, Blues or Kings.
Sure a guy like Franson has size as well, but he doesn't use it in the way it needs to be used. Now, if you think that can be coached up in CF, then sure I guess his acquisition makes sense. Trouble is though is that Franson is going to get at least 5 years and im guessing 5.5-6 million per. That will then limit you in the extensions for the young guys coming in the next couple years, regardless if Wideman is shipped out or not.
Every team needs to carry inexpensive Dmen in the cap world and Calgary is no different. Though 3 million sounds like a lot, in this day and age it really isn't for anyone not on an ELC. A guy like Schlemko is also going to be needed....1 million or so for a bottom pairing guy with experience.
My thoughts anyhow.

Sweeny madness continues?
Chris Kuc @ChrisKuc
Another source says Bruins are interested in #Blackhawks winger Bryan Bickell. Hawks would have to retain some salary in a deal there.

As I read that, I felt a cold chill go down my spine, and I had a flashback to the Flames' 1998-99 roster...could this be Sweeney's new working-template?

More Sweeney madness.
Love that the Flames cashed in, but Bruins fans must be ready to riot.

After the amount of concussions Bergeron has had I would be impressed if he remembers Friday afternoon.

I think the Flamesnwill be rather quiet tomorrow in terms of signings but hopefully they are still active on the trade front. If Treliving could work some magic maybe turn some quantity into quality.
Forwards as of now (lines not necessarily accurate)
Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler
Bouma-Bennett-Colborne
Ferland-Backlund-Jones
Raymond-Stajan-Jooris
Bollig-Granlund-Shore
Byron
That is 5 lines worth of NHL forwards with a 16th guy. I am not a huge fan of that second line and would prefer to dump Raymond (teams want speed right?) and Bollig (teams want size right?) and possibly see what kind of value a Granlund + Jooris/Shore package could have.
The Flamea still have Porier, Arnold, Reinhart, Klimchuck as guys they can call up from Stockton next year so the depth remains strong. We do lack legit top 6 wingers however and I hope Treliving addresses that need via trade

You are wasting your time my friend trying to explain the importance of Engelland. There are a few posters here who hate him and think he sucks and will not accept any other view, despite what the majority of fans, his actual coaches, hockey observers say.

Maybe the Hawks will sweeten the deal and throw in a couple of new knees for Bickell.

This is a strange comment. Bergeron hasn't been affected by concussions in years and just won the Selke this past season. He is in fine shape, health wise.
