I personally love the trade. Hamilton is a long term solution to a big weakness in the Flames had. I waited a few days before posting my thoughts as I'm trying not to let my expectations gets swept up in all the excitement.

It's a home run because no matter how it turns out I don't think anyone can sit there and say that the Flames made a bad deal. They gave up a 15th overall pick and 2 seconds for a young, 22 year old, right handed Dman with elite potential. Those guys are super hard to find and it's extremely rare that one is even available for trade.

To me the trade breaks down as our first, our third, Baertschi, and Glencross for Hamilton and Kylington. I'd do that trade every day of the week and twice on Fridays.

I've watched Dougie Hamilton play a little before and really like his game, but he's not someone I've watched a ton over the last few years so I'm not sure really what to expect.

The nice thing is he is stepping into a situation where there are 4 guys who can log big minutes. He doesn't need to step in right away and be a big minute munching shut down guy. His style of game seems like it'll fit Calgary's system but if it takes a while for him to get accustomed to the team he's got coverage.

The other thing that I really like about this is Calgary drafted 2 other kids who have the same kind of potential. Hamilton is the more established, most likely to reach his potential ATM, but anything can happen (injuries ect...) and the Flames didn't put all their eggs in 1 basket, which is really nice to see.

While I don't buy the best defense in the NHL, i feel that's an over-reaction to the trade, Calgary did put themselves into the top 10 in the league for defense, possibly even top 5, with the room to grow into the best defense should their players continue to take steps forward.

I also like the message it sends to the locker room. We made the playoffs and that's great, we expect to get there again and do better, here's some reinforcements.

disagree. I'm glad he asked, we got a good discussion out of it and got to see some valid viewpoints.

The site always takes a turn for the worst when the team takes a turn for the better.

Yeah, just to clarify guys, my post came from a place of genuine curiosity. As is the case with most threads that have polls, the majority of voters don't end up sharing their thoughts in the thread. There was like 600+ votes, and there certainly wasn't opinions from 600+ posters in this thread.

I just felt that the questions were decent for a quick synopsis of how the site feels about the trade, but there's much more that could be clarified and expanded on in the actual thread, and it seemed the thread was dominated by the positive/over the moon posters and there wasn't much at all in the way of posts from the three bottom options.

This is why I asked the way I did, so we could maybe hear from some of them seeing as they're take on the trade from the little info we were provided (one sentence poll options) maybe doesn't tell the whole story, and their choices were clearly heavily against the general feeling from most fans and media on the trade.

Either way, it seems my post sparked at least three posters to expand on their decision and all three gave very genuine, detailed explanations for their votes, and so thank you.

Itse, I'm sorry if I offended you with that post, I know you're a good poster and my "attacking posters who disagree with me" days are way behind me, so I assure you that wasn't my intention. But noted for the future that the actual posting of the names seemed to be the cause of a frustration for a couple guys, so I'll avoid that, going forward.

Personally I don't understand why people would be angry after having their vote displayed. Anyone can go and check to see who voted which way, just like everyone can see your posts.

This is a forum site intended to encourage discussion after all. Posting your thoughts, and to a lesser degree, voting, are the only methods I really know about to do so. Maybe it felt a bit like people were 'calling you out' - and maybe that was the intention - but who cares? I have been 'called out' a number of times for a viewpoint. I wouldn't post/vote/contribute in any way if I was 'afraid' of getting called out.

Just keep contributing your thoughts/ideas on this site. There is bound to be some arguments - even some piling on occasionally - but a large chunk of that list is respected posters (like Itse for instance) who's opinions and contributions I value. A few others you just have to roll your eyes and ignore, as they are known for constantly being negative at every chance (walking the fine line between being a troll).

Anyways.. Woot! Dougie Hamilton! Andersson!! Kylington!!

I must admit, I got a bit less enthusiastic when I saw Connor fall, but one of the posters above me is right - still a lesser prospect than Bennett, Monahan and Gaudreau, though I would rank him ahead of Poirier and Klimuchuk (who everyone forgets about, or just remembers to only include in trade proposals - Klimchuk is going to be a player).

Anaheim definitely exposed Calgary. Hamilton wouldn't have been the difference in that series, but he is definitely a huge step in the right direction as an answer to Anaheim.

In my opinion, you trade a Connor for a Hamilton every day of the week, and I thought Connor should have been selected in the top 10, and will make a lot of other teams regret passing him over. Hamilton will be a huge piece for the next decade.

And elaborate as to why they picked said option as well? I think that's where the curiosity came in.

There are some names you Expect to be in there just because that's their schtick, but I think a lot of people are curious why some are skeptical or against what has been widely heralded as such a home-run move...

I'm not afraid to call this defensive core one of the best in the league now. I know points arn't everything but 4 defensemen in the top 30 in the league points wise is pretty impressive, with Russell not far behind in the mid-40s I think. With the leadership of Gio and the work ethic on both sides of the ice I think all 5 are of a high quality.

My only reservation is the Bowmeester - Phanuef "best defense in the league" fiasco. They look great on paper but I hope (and with Gio in charge I am fairly confident) that it won't play out like they did.

This sentiment has been tossed around a lot both on here and by other fans across the league on message boards.

The biggest difference is hockey sense. While there was excitement when we put together that d-core with Bowmeester, Regehr and Phaneuf, it's easy to look back and see the biggest difference was hockey sense.

That is something this new group has in spades. They're also much quicker, and move the puck better. It's a group suited much more toward the way the game is currently played.

It's a good cautionary tale to not count your chickens before they hatch, but I'm not worried that our current group will falter just because Phaneuf was a cave-man, Bowmeester was the Tin-Man and Reggie (while a warrior) was more suited to a clutch-and-grab style of play.

I think this current d-core will be very good for a long time.

The Flames may very well end up having to play Dennis (4th in the league in points with 56) Wideman as our number 5 next season.

In fact, the Flames now have 4 of the top 24 defencemen point producers.

4th - Wideman with 56
13th - Giordano with 48 (despite the injury)
23rd - Hamilton with 42
24th - Brodie with 41

The argument is a good one but isn't the whole point of accumulating picks and best player available is that you can use it to address a shortcoming? I think treliving did a masterful job in that regard.

If we draft another forward when he's ready a guy that should be playing top 6 probably won't excel being a checker. Then you have glaring weakness in the backend.

The picks are great to have but we already have legit top tier forwards, what we lacked was another defenseman who could log 22 plus minutes. It's not like we traded for mike green we just got a franchise player who after putting up 42 points at age 21 has his prime years ahead of him. Not only that we still picked twice in the 2nd round and potentially landed two impact players.

If you watched the Anaheim series we needed another game breaker on the back end we needed size and speed and Hamilton gives us that. We are now a goalie and top 6 forward away from being in the hunt of winning the Stanley cup next season.

Heh yeap.

All that AND Russell put up a 50+ point pace with an increased role after Gios injury. Hartleys system is made for offensive PMDs

Acquiring Hamilton is a win for Calgary but this kind of opportunity do not happen often. My take. Treliving got a gift from the Boston organization and it fell onto his lap. It was in a sense, "the Oilers are desperate for a top dman, well, screw the fired-Chiarelli and Edmonton, even when Edmonton had a slightly better offer, we are going with Calgary, your arch rival...How do you like them apples now, EDM?"

Now, this was probably viewed as a an Italian hand gesture of FU proportion from Boston's side. So Mr. Sather, a loyal ex-Oiler GM, winked and said, "Screw that, though I had better offers for Talbot, we will ship him to Edmonton and get this BOA going..."
