And it wasn't "presto" at all. It was a steady improvement for Russell over the last year or so to the point where he really stepped up in these last playoffs.

Gem from HF in the main trade thread:

"I remember this old web-based flash game where you were this drunk, and the entire purpose was to try to stay upright as long as you can while stumbling down an alley.

That's what the Bruins are reminding me of so far."

I agree with those that believe Russell has quietly become a very solid, top 4 defenseman who can step up to top 2 due to injury.

In my dream world, we see Brad stick to the plan of moving this rebuild along and getting younger in the process. So we keep the 28 year old Russell, call him part of the D-core going forward.

We leverage the 32 year old Wideman's amazing season into a younger asset. Hopefully a few contenders are in play, because they love the puck moving, offense he could bring (obviously a contender sees a better chance of Dennis waiving his no trade clause). Then through either that trade or some other move we end up getting a younger top 4/5 D man with solid second pairing potential, and then let Russel and that new D man battle it out for the coveted 4th spot on our team.

Then you re-sign Schlemko, who was picked up off waivers, yes I get it, but still proved to be a very solid bottom paring D-man, who is quite versatile in our line-up, would likely want to sign here, and would come in at a very reasonable price. I feel the reason that some want to forget about signing him (he was a waiver wire, dime a dozen Dman) is the exact reason the Flames should keep him, as we got to see that he was quite valuable in our line-up, where as the perception around the league is "Oh him, he's a waiver wire guy, don't bother". SO we end up getting him for around $1mil/yr.

So then you have

Giordano - Hamilton
Russell/New D-man - Brodie
Schlemko - Russell/New Dman
Engelland

In all honesty, I don't see a team that requires D-men and acquires Wideman being a team that can give us that younger D-man back. So in reality, I hope that Wideman can actually be part of something that gets us a solid top 6 RW (obviously there'd be more to it then that) and then we get that young D-man somewhere else.

It'd actually be funny/awesome if Wideman helped get us a young RW and Hudler helped get us a young D-man. When you think about it, that actually makes the most sense, as teams aren't likely looking to give away the thing they're trying to get from you in a trade.

My prediction is we make one more move on defense this summer that pushes the media over the top and makes them start talking "Does Calgary have the number one Defense in the league?".

@CoachsCornerCBC

1) Calgary has the best defence in the League now after getting Dougie Hamilton from Boston. Think about it, TJ Brodie from Chatham, Ontario

2) Mark Giordano from Toronto; Kris Russell from Caroline, Alberta; Dennis Wideman from Kitchener Ontario and of course one of my

3) favourites Deryk Engelland from Edmonton is there to keep guys honest. Their defence is now better than Chicago’s.

Random question... When are we going to see some decent NHLers come from the Yukon? PEI has put out some pretty darn good players, but I'm only seeing two from the Yukon.

This is one of the best drafts we've had ever. Still can't believe we landed Dougie!

When rumours came out after the season that Dougie might be moved, I couldn't fathom that we could've packaged something without moving one of the young core pieces or moving heaven and earth for him. I was thinking that if he was still not signed by July 1, we definitely need to put an offer sheet together for $7.3 per for 5yrs and the compensation would be absolutely worth it. He just fits so perfectly with what the Flames need and right in the young core.

Now we upgraded the 3rd rounder to a 2nd rounder but it also gives us a much broader scope of contract $$ and term we can work with Dougie's camp. A long term deal would be ideal - 7 years is the max I believe since he wasn't on our roster at the trade deadline. $6-6.5m for 7yrs is very doable, but if we did that for the offer sheet it would be at least the next tier of compensation going back, so we'd lose an extra 1st as a result. Therefore, this trade works perfectly.

What I wonder is why some people have voted for the last 2 options - not trying to pick a fight, but more about what their reservations or concerns are regarding this move.

I like guys playing on their corrects sides, so I think that's the way they should go. However I am intrigued to see what Brodie can do when he gets back with Giordano. He went through a slip when Giordano went down, and then found his new game and went up another level for the playoffs despite the injury.

But if he goes back to playing with someone that he doesn't have to prop up he could be scary.

Pretty sure they did it just for the 'laughs' so to speak. If not they're crazy, IMO

With Brodie's hockey IQ letting him see the play and opportunities to jump into it, it would be best if he was also paired with a high hockey IQ player, even if there was a lesser skill set there. Someone who can read Brodie as Brodie reads the ice would really let him cut loose.

Huge fan of stockpiling draft picks when in a rebuild , however, when was the last time a D of Hamilton's quality and age ( just turned 22)became available and subsequently traded.
Hamilton accelerates the Flames rebuild immensely.

I bet the Coyotes, Leafs, Hurricanes, NJ and Flyers would not have traded their 1st pick for what the Flames sent to Boston for Hamilton.

Would anyone on this forum trade Hamilton for any of the players that were picked 3-7?

I didn't think so.

Absolute grand slam home run!

Hamilton fits the needs of the Flames perfectly, so I wouldn't, but if we ignore the circumstances I'd probably trade him for Strome, Marner, or Hanifin.

Again, if I'm the Flames though, no way I make that trade.

Hamilton fits the needs of the teams I mentioned a lot more than any of the 18 yr olds they selected.

Before this draft I was wanting defencemen. If I had my way all the picks would have been defencemen. Well that didn't happen but it was pretty close as we picked up Hamilton (a great trade, far more than I expected), Andersson, Kylington (two second rounders that were on my radar) , and Bruce.

I guess I'll just stop voting since it seems people are just being #######s about it.

Noise-signal ratio is starting to get bad on this site anyway. Too little info, too few thoughtful posts, too many endless arguments about the same few topics, and way too much piling on people for dissenting opinions.

The site always takes a turn for the worst when the team takes a turn for the better.
