I would think that 5 years would have been ok, but then Dougie would be UFA at 27.
I stand by my prediction. 3yrs. 4 at the most. But nobody ever accused me of being smart.

So you really think that if Treliving made a case for an 8 year extension, and Burke said no, that Treliving would offer it anyway only for Burke to veto it? Of course not.
When the deal gets done, it will be a deal that everyone in hockey ops and ownership is fine with. And as you say, 5 years takes him to UFA. You're thinking that it will be less than 5 years, but there's no reason to think that "BUT BURKE!" means it absolutely cannot be longer than 5 years in order to buy some years of UFA status. Especially since the Flames already know Hamilton isn't looking for a bridge deal.

I agree with you, however, there are a few factors:
Hamilton only has 3yrs experience.
No Arbitration rights
5yrs takes him to UFA (so a bridge makes more sense)
The Flames have 3 HUGE RFA contracts to negotiate in the next 3yrs, and this will set a precedent
The Flames are in the middle of a negotiation with Gio - and he is likely not being offered more than 5yrs

Yeah, no.

I hope the Flames use a different model of fax machine than Dale Tallon.

At this point, I'd say his ceiling is higher than Brodie's, so I'd go with 5 years x 31.25 million for a 6.25 AAV. However, with Brodie making 4.8 million after next year (again, wizardry of a contract by Treliving), I wouldn't be surprised if Treliving can convince him to not exceed Brodie's deal by too much. Irrationally optimistic that they can get it done for 5.9 AAV with Gio getting 7.85 AAV next summer after winning the Norris.

Those are all better points. I would submit than offering a deal longer than 5 years to a 22 year old RFA makes more sense than offering a deal longer than 5 years to a 31 year old who won't start playing under the extension until he's 33. But your points are well taken.
It seems the consensus is that the Hamilton deal will not be 5 years at any rate. Shorter or longer than that remains to be seen.

Do you think he'll get the Brodie treatment? By which I mean, will Treliving look to keep his salary for next year less than $4M (aks Giordano limit)?

6 Years, $5.4 mil AAV. Why so low? He will get paid $3.9 mil the first year, same as Brodie and less than Gio. Then 2 years of $5 mil, $5.5 mil, $6 mil, $7 mil, years 4, 5, and 6.

This is a big contract for Treliving. If he goes long on term I doubt we see bridge contracts for Monahan, Gaudreau, or Bennett. The Flames did give up 3 good picks to get him so my hoping is we go the full 7 we are able to.
If we can bridge him then it sets a precedent for the contracts that follow and if we buy UFA years now then it sets the expectations the other way moving forward.
Going full Oiler and locking our young guys up to $6M deals should allow for a fair bit of cap flexibility but then they all approach UFA while still in their prime and keeping them would result in paying guys well into their 30's big numbers if we re-sign.
My gut tells me the deal is 5-7 years long at $5-$6M per

$32.5M/5 years -- $6.5 AAV
If I'm in DH's camp, there's no way I sign away UFA years when I'm only 22. In five years, the cap could be much higher and he could write his own ticket, being the best UFA on the market in several years.

Explain... too big of an AAV or he's not as good as he's made out to be?
