Pronger cap hit $4.9M. Actual salary: $575,000. As @TGfireandice adds, could go into the Hall of Fame on Monday.

Grossman has 1 year left at $3.5M while Gagner has 1 year left at $3.2M.

Arizona just got a potential HoF player for edmontons scraps! /s

But really this seems odd, does grossman really provide any value?

They need some NHL bodies to get them thru next season while theyre on their quest for Mathews.

Plus, as a pending UFA who will likely get a ton of ice time, Grossman could very well be flipped at the deadline as a rental.

I'd say in about 5 years time, the Yotes will have a very strong hockey team.

Flyers should not be allowed to trade Pronger's contract.

Hehe.

Sam Gagner was drafted 6th overall.
The team that drafted Sam Gagner was just a year removed from a SCF.
The reason they went from the SCF to 6th overall was because of Chris Pronger.
Now Sam Gagner has been traded for Chris Pronger.

The Oilers lose.

^ I still don't get it.
Grossman for Gagner is wash.
Why take on the contract of Pronger?
What is the benefit? Cap floor?

But wouldn't gagner fill that void? Let alone taking on extra cap hit with pronger? Unless they're trying to hit the cap minimum while actually spending as little money as possible, this is an odd trade.

That's exactly what they're trying to do IMO

Cheap way to get to the cap floor. Pronger's cap hit is 4.9 apparently but only makes 550k. So they basically save 4.4 million off their budget.

Can't see the nhlpa being too happy about this. Probably wishing they would written provisions into the cba to avoid this sort of thing.

Agreed. There should be some sort of recapture penalty for trading a player who has no interest in playing again. Seems like a conflict of interest taking on a player who is now employed in the management of the league but still receives a paycheque under the NHLPA.

There are such provisions in the current CBA. The loophole has already been closed, but existing contracts had to be grandfathered in.

The Flyers can now buyout Gagner, and because of his age, they'd only have to pay him 1/3 of his salary spread over two years (this would also save Tampa some money because they retained salary when they traded him to Arizona).

Arizona will probably not buyout Grossmann because they have serious needs on defence.

And to take on this massive cap hit, they had to give up a pick...

It's the same as the Nathan Horton trade, except everyone was saying it was a brilliant deal at the time.
