Don't fool yourselves, Engelland is a millstone. He should not be paired with top-4 defenders, nor should he play against anything but weak competition. Brodie plays the big mans game, Engelland, though he settled into a nice groove, still drags a player of Brodie's calibre down. Engelland should keep himself firmly planted in the #7 position. Right behind Russell-Wideman-Wotherspoon.
Heavily disagree, Engelland is bad with a slow shut down guy but is great with a puck moving partner. He's the toughest guy on our team, can clear the front of the net, intimidates the opposition, is the best at breaking up a cycle and like Colborne he elevates his game big time in the playoffs.
Engelland's not a point producer but he has a lot of uses and can shut down the oppositions cycle so well we need him when the going gets tough. He thrives under pressure when the rest of the team is overwhelmed. Having an intimidating tough dman that can clear the front of the net is valuable. Nobody takes a run at our goalie with him around.

Treliving says he's talked to JP Barry, Hamilton's agent, a couple times already. Doesn't foresee any issues with signing the RFA. #Flames

He may pass the eyeball test from the play-by-play on TV, but statically, he's a black hole. Even after he leveled out last year. He would probably do ok against bottom lines which is the only place he should be on a contending team.

I can almost buy this, but I can't swallow that Wotherspoon is miraculously good enough to play on our second line/in a permanent spot on the big team.

With the addition of Dougie Hamilton, one NHL head coach said he thinks Flames now have best defense in the West.
edit: This actually gave me deja vu. Back to when Bouwmeester signed.
Yes to the bold part....BUT, we don't have B Sutter here to stifle the ##### out of our defense group / offensive game.
We have Hartley, who came in and actually rejuvenated Bouwmeester's value making him tradeable again, and who has already proven his system is perfect for puck moving defenseman like Hamilton.

I would attribute that to the fact he was with Smid most of the season. Once he was with Brodie he got substantially better because he could take the pucl and give it to Brodie who could clear it whereas with Smid he had no options. Who else can breakup Anaheims cycle?

And Olli Jokinen isn't our 1st line center.
We didn't just let a 39 goalscorer walk and replace him with Nigel Dawes.
We didn't just let our 2nd line RW walk with no replacement

I still get night terrors thinking of the way Brent used Bouwmeester. I don't have a lot of love for Jay but the one thing he excelled at was sneaking high into the slot for a good scoring attempt. He was so good at getting there and being open for a quick one-timer and Brent didn't allow him to do that. Totally neutered his game changing skating game.
Anchoring him with Butler was such a mess too.
Our defence under Hartley this season was a revelation. He knew exactly how to use Giordano, Brodie, Wideman and Russell.

We could hypothetically got him for fractionally less, but the Bruins would have likely matched.
If Boston were willing to match, then they could also offer sheet him for potentially less than what we gave them (provided they're able to come to fair terms with Tampa to re-acquire their 2016 2nd, and pending their final placement).

We just got one of the top 10 players under the age of 25 for nothing but draft picks and he fits the #1 weakness in the Flames system on top of that.
If the Flames tossed all the rest of their 2015 picks in, I'd still think it was a home run.
Dougie Hamilton had the 23rd most points among D-men and he's as good defensively.
