Now the question is where does he play? Gio/Brodie were so good last year, but how can you slot him as #3....spread out the ice time between the top 4 equally? who plays with him Russell or Wideman?

The WOWY stat is used quite often to show how great of a player Backlund is, as he improves the players around him.
Hamilton does that but in a magnified effect. Selke winner Bergeron and former Norris winner Chara is on that list.
With the Flames allegedly having interest in Frolik, a good player that happens to drive possession well, they are taking this stat seriously and could very well see the fruits of their labour in the statsheet as early as this upcoming season.

Obviously this is a great trade, but the contract he signs will decide if it's a home run in my opinion. I hope we can get a reasonable contract done and avoid a cap problem in the future and I'm optimistic we can do that. If treliving truly is a god, he'll get a 2 year bridge contract done before the end of the weekend! :P
Hopefully he fits in well with the guys on our team and I hope he likes our city as a home

Giordano - Brodie is still the better pairing, as great as Hamilton is. I think Dougie may end up being our #1 eventually, but for now he's perfect in that #3 defenceman role.
I would put Wideman with him even if they're both righties. The two of them can form a pretty deadly 2nd PP pairing. Plus, Russell and Engelland seemed to have some chemistry earlier in the season.

An odd deal - winning the trade (i.e. doing better than an offer sheet) requires either losing the player or overpaying him.
If Hamilton signs for less than $7.3M we overpaid. If he signs for more than $7.3M then we underpaid, but Hamilton might be overpaid. I'm guessing he comes in under, which means Boston won the trade - even if they would've lost had we made a similar offer sheet instead.

Honestly, with the way the end of 14-15 played out, I would 100% fine with
Gio-Hamilton
Brodie-Engelland
Russell-Wideman
Assuming Gio and Dougie play well together ofc.

Not really... It's more like, If you can't sign him for less than 7.3, you overpaid for the privilege of not going through the offer sheet process.

Bird in hand is better than bird in the bush.
We could hypothetically got him for fractionally less, but the Bruins would have likely matched.

Dougie Hamilton is a Flame!
We're the envy of the Western Conference!
Future #1 defenceman.
Gio, Brodie, Hamilton, Russell, Wideman. My oh my!

Don't fool yourselves, Engelland is a millstone. He should not be paired with top-4 defenders, nor should he play against anything but weak competition. Brodie plays the big mans game, Engelland, though he settled into a nice groove, still drags a player of Brodie's calibre down. Engelland should keep himself firmly planted in the #7 position. Right behind Russell-Wideman-Wotherspoon.

But we can't look at 'winning ' a trade from the perspective of what the Bruins would b be compensated by with an offer sheet, as there's no guarantee that he would sign one with us, and that we would out bid other teams. We win a trade by looking at our team prior to the trade, and then after the eventual outcome. Regardless of what happens, pending a ridiculous offer sheet that the flames match, we're better off after than before. And it's argue that we win the trade because we will improve our positron through this trade greater than Boston improves (or in this case, crashes and burns)

I haven't had too much of a chance to read everything but this seems like highway robbery by Treliving. This is a dream scenario in my opinion we didn't have to give up Porier, Klimchuck, Spoon, Granlund, Gillies or obviously any of the top young guys like Johnny, Monahan, or Bennett.
The Flames now have 2 stud D with Brodie (just turned 25), and Hamilton (22) 2 stud centers in Monahan (21 in Oct), Bennett (just turned 19) and a star winger in Johnny (22 next month)
Unbelievable core

Bob McKenzie, Pierre McGuire, and Button were giving us praise on TSN.ca for the Hamilton trade. Saying the future is looking good and getting better all the time. Pierre says Calgary is for real.

The only negative I can think of about this whole trade is that summer has just started and now I can't wait until it's over

Please. Please. I won't stay past my bed time all summer if this is how the opening day roster shakes out.
I also hear this Kenny Morrison kid could be for real...

IMO you put Hamilton with Gio, and keep Brodie on the left side second pairing with Wideman. Russell slides to the third pairing with Engelland.
Giordano - Hamilton
TJ Brodie - Wideman
K Russell - Engelland
Righty/Lefty on each pair. The third pairing won't need to be as sheltered anymore. D is going to be balanced.

Returns on offer sheets are brutal. Saying that the Bruins won this trade because they got what they might have received on an offer sheet doesn't work. You lost a player of Hamilton's quality to an offer sheet because you can't afford to match and you feel like you got kicked in the nards. The same feeling Bruin fans felt today.
