ah, yeah - I'm growing more and more fond of potentially acquiring Talbot, but yeah - I still wouldn't move a 1st rounder for him.

Meh, the attention on this is more from the press, fed by the agents or GM's trying to create a buzz, that latch onto these things and make them into more prominent storylines. Then when one peice gets moved, as this morning, those that have been caught up int e speculation carry it through and revisit everything.

If Ramo and Hiller aren't the preferred combo, then yeah, with Ortio, they have to find someone else...but by having a remotely more productive second line, and defensive depth, would've had this team possibly into the 3rd round of the playoffs, with the current goaltending.

And I don't think that Treliving/Burke have any doubt about what it will take to get to that next level as far as what is required as far as skaters.

For those wondering why the Flames are sniffing around for a goalie anyway. I explained that last week in this piece: http://flamesfrom80feet.blogspot.ca/...of-flames.html
Definitely opened my eyes to a valid point to make about our depth beyond this season. Great read.

I've said this in other threads but watching Klimchuk quite a bit over the past few years when he comes to play the Blades I would compare him to Eberle. He has a tireless work ethic out there, and while he might not always be the most skilled player on the ice, he sets the tone and other players follow his lead. You can see him on the bench picking up his team and he always, ALWAYS back checks. Very mature and responsible, he is the guy that the coach looks at for clutch situations.

He has the ability to play just as good in the defensive zone as the offensive zone, and given the numbers he has put up in junior that should tell you all you need to know about this kid. Another player I would liken him to is the Dustin Brown from his first major contract... not sure who this new Brown is..

Good attitude to boot with Klimchuk, and a very underrated skill set. Here's a little refresher from a while back:

If Treliving has spoken with Ramo, Dubnyk, and Niemi and thinks their asking prices are too high, then he has to look elsewhere if he thinks he needs another goalie for next season.

I suspect he has at least one offer for Hiller that he really wants to take, but won't make that move until he has solidified the goalie situation without Hiller. On the radio last week, after talking about being happy with Hiller and Ramo, he said something about using your goaltending depth to improve the team at other positions.

If Treliving believes that the difference between Hiller and Talbot isn't significant and the return for Hiller can be significant, it makes sense for him to try to make the deal. While we're seeing the deal as Talbot for two second round picks, Treliving may be seeing it as Talbot plus Hiller's trade value for Hiller and two seconds.
Ramo has a shot at #1 here... if he can't handle competition for the job he shouldn't be here I guess. Odds are he never gets a better chance than Calgary. Keep a .920 for a while and the spot's his, does he think another team will just start him with no consideration to their backups? How is it going to be different for him elsewhere?

Good luck to him I guess, he'll need it.

My own thoughts on that would be that I don't believe he does.

He showed last year that he doesn't have the ability to maintain a high level of play over an extended period of time. I like Ramo, but I don't think he can be more than a half of a tandem. If the Flames really wanted to retain Ramo, I think they would have. They're clearly showing the desire to add another goalie, so they're making the choice not to go with Ramo.

I don't doubt you have seen Klimchuk play a lot but tireless work ethic, back checking, and leading aren't qualities I would use to describe Jordan Eberle who is a pretty lazy player that happens to have a lot of skill.

I agree with you assessment of Klimchuk and would rather have him remain Flames property and run with Hiller than let him go to get Talbot.

Safe to say the Talbot to Calgary trade (at least for two seconds) is dead?

They still have a 2nd, and next year's 2nd.

But the Hamilton trade sure seemed to shut Dreger up about Talbot

Dont know why were hearing the Flames in talks about Goalies this off-season. They have 2 Goalies under contract. They shouldnt really be looking for a Goalie unless there is an Injury or its next off-season.

Maybe Hiller is considering retiring or is unhappy that Ramo re-took the net and quietly asked for a trade..

3 Goalies makes no sense.

One thing that has been consistent in his junior representative days was he was often the 3rd guy on a big line - he knows how to play his role with more skilled players. Would not surprise me at all to see him being a "glue" player in Calgary in 2 seasons time
I always felt like Klimchuk could be alot like Dean McAmmond or Craig Conroy

It's been discussed already in the thread, but thought process is get someone here for a 2-3 years (until one of the young guys is fully ready) instead of Hiller for 1 and having the problem next year or at the deadline.

Chiarelli and Sather just broke from another discussion. Slats now meeting with his group. Has to be about Talbot.

Flames still in on Talbot?

Quote:
Indeed, The Post has learned the Flames, who sent the 15th, 45th and 52nd overall selections to the Bruins for Dougie Hamilton in the afternoon, intend to go back at it and submit a bid for the Blueshirts’ incumbent understudy to Henrik Lundqvist.

Hopefully they've chatted with Dubnyk and have gotten the notion that he would be happy to sign in CGY for "fair market value"
