Trying to remember trends from a full 82 schedule is somewhat difficult, but how many of those exciting comebacks and storybook endings were a result of poor goaltending? Hiller had a tendency to give up a bad goal at a bad time. Obviously team play is a huge factor, but in many cases the goaltending didn't necessarily help. Where would the Flames have been in the standings with a bit better goaltending?
I see the pursuit of a goalie as 70% for now and 30% for the future. This is still a rebuild, and that should be the focus. Management has also said that the goal is still to make the payoffs. They want to be competitive. But also if you believe that Ortio can be your #1 guy, you can't just throw him to the wolves. He is close, but he's not ready yet. You have to protect Ortio as well.
I understand the interest, but if Treliving packages 2 second rounders in a draft like this for a maybe kind of good goalie....somebody gonna geta hurt real bad.
|
no kidding, the goal tending wasn't that great...for every stolen game there was a terrible start that put the team behind the eight ball
Fans seem so quick to dismiss Talbot but I think the guy is great

I'm fine with going Hiller/Ortio this year, or going after another stop gap until guys like ortio/gilles are able to take on a larger role with the big club in the coming years.
|
I honestly don't think the Flames manage the timeline that way.
They need a goaltender until a young goaltender proves they need the net. They have Ortio, Gillies and McDonald in the pipeline but they don't know if any or all of them will pan out.
Better to bring in a guy that can do the job and then have that guy pushed to the side by a better option down the road.
Organizations that assume youth can do it fail often.

NYR have been offered a 1st rounder for Talbot. Not from Oilers or Flames. Dallas, SJ and Florida still involved. 1st isn't a deal maker.

NYR are looking for the best overall package, even though a 1st round pick for Talbot is attractive.

I simply think that Treliving simply puts irons in every fire in hopes of improving his team but he only makes the deals that make sense for the Flames. It's obvious that no GM so far is willing to offer a 1st round pick for Talbot so it's a matter of interested GM's calling Sather's bluff. Let's face it the Rangers have been blowing a lot of smoke all weeks desperately trying to drive up the price to a 1st round pick. They likely won't get it and the real dealing can begin after the completion of the 1st round. Talbot is likely going to be moved for a 2nd round pick + a later pick or prospect and if Treliving's really hot and heavy for this guy he may make a deal but I wouldn't be surprised if nothing happens on the goaltending front for the Flames this weekend.

I hope to god that means we're out. The asking prices are so high it's sickening. Hope the Stars and Sharks miss out and have interest in Hiller....I mean if the sharks are looking at Bieksa anything is possible!

That might be good news if the Rangers are getting a 1st from a team other than the Flames or Oilers, but I think it is BS, obviously trying to pry the 1st from the Flames or Oilers

I agree about Treliving's approach.
On no one offering a first... timing is everything when posting, eh?

Really? They're not sold on 1st rounder for Talbot? I would take that and run to the bank.

Time for Treliving to throw in Hanowski to close it.

Would rather spend $5 million on Dubnyk than give up multiple 1st and 2nd round picks for Talbot.

These prices for Talbot are getting insane.
Then again, Ottawa did just get a 1st rounder for bit parts, so who am I to say anything.

So when they accept a 2nd round pick and a prospect "best overall package" will be their excuse for not getting a 1st round pick? Is Sather taking a page out of the Dale Tallon book of how to be a really bad poker player?

Is Dreger a NYR schill now? Did Nonis get a job with them.
Feels like with every tweet the market gets more expensive for Talbot, and he is trying to help drive up the price.

This seriously starting to seem like it's the Rangers leaking BS information in an attempt to drive up the price of their own player.
