Hiller had more starts, less pulls and generally a slightly longer leash.

IMO Hartley playing Ramo instead of Hiller in the elimination game, speaks volumes.

Depending on the price it would be ok but not at the cost of 2 second rounders. I could see one second and a prospect.

I really hope flames are not in a bidding war, set to over pay on a BACKUP goalie. Just check his numbers, he has never been a starter.
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=100197
In 2012-13 with the Connecticut Whales he played 55 games, the most of his career.
Please flames do not attempt to get this guy as a #1.

Yeah, I would probably wait and see how the next few weeks shake out before crucifying Treliving over any moves he makes this weekend.

...we wouldn't be acquiring Talbot for what he has done, we'd be acquiring him for what Treliving/Bruke THINK he can do.
Remember, goalie is the hardest position to project.
Kipper was once upon a time a 3rd string goalie who had never been a starter. Ben Bishop, Craig Anderson...the list goes on and on.
If we go after Talbot, and pay a lot, it's because our management has scouted him and believe he is about to break out as a high-end #1 goalie.

Not being able to lock him up until January is concerning. If he comes in and is average or bad, then we've overpaid. If he comes in and is lights out, why wouldn't he just test free agency? He'll have all of half a season on this team and no reason to be loyal.
Not a fan. Especially not at the quoted price.

Sorry if it has been asked an answered, but why IS Talbot attracting so much attention? I have not seen him play so I can't comment on how he is. Seems to me Ben Scrivens came to the Oilers with a ton of hype because of his previous backup stats, and look at the season he had last year.

And given that multiple teams have interest, it isn't just the Flames' brass that seems to think this guy has something.
I'm not going to state an opinion on Talbot because frankly I've barely watched him. Which I suspect is the case for many here.

I'd be okay with Martin Jones. May cost less than Talbot.

Yeah, it means Ramo was on a roll and Hartley went with it, just like all year long.
He went with Hiller to eliminate the Canucks (and yes, he had to switch mid-game). Then he went right back to Hiller to start against the Ducks. Example of a longer leash. And who he thought was the starter.
He also went with Hiller to clinch the POs versus the Kings (and in the entire run up to that game).

Seems pointless to acquire a 27, almost 28 year old goaltender when we could just re-sign Ramo who is of the same age.

You assume Ramo wants to be back in Calgary. Take two to tango.

I have a feeling Scrivens could be a pretty adequate goalie elsewhere. Not the gamechanger Oiler fans trumpeted when they got him, but a decent goalie.
And see Devan Dubnyk.

I agree, I'm, not saying that 3rd string goalies/players cant be great. I'm saying that you should not sign them to be your #1.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Ramo have the league's best road SV%? I know he has that one miserable game in Florida, but he was fantastic on the road for most of the season from what I recall. I know late in the season, he had a better road SV% than Price. Not sure if it held up right to the end, however.
Still hoping the Flames re-sign him and trade Hiller, or sign Dubynk and trade Hiller. Flames add a few draft picks to their rebuilding team. Heck, I don't mind if they use whatever assets they can from Hiller's trade to just draft another goalie.
I guess in the end, if the Flames give up two second round picks (+), and Talbot ends up being the next long-term franchise goalie for the Flames ala Vernon or Kipper, then that is a very good trade to make and one the Flames will make out like bandits on really. I am just not so convinced he is that good or promises to be that good.
BTW, I haven't heard a single peep out of anyone being interested in Ramo. Any real rumors of teams talking with Ramo at the moment? I know they can't talk salary, but any legitimate rumors of teams interviewing Ramo at all?

Right, but I also think that there are good goalies on the market that are better than Talbot. Niemi and Dubnyk would be ideal candidates to go after, and we don't have to trade any assets for them.

I would take Jones over Talbot, but would rather not bother with either of them.

keep in mind 25%(?) of 2nd round players go on to play 100NHL games. For every Shea Weber or Patrice Bergeron there are a couple hundred Tim Ramholts.
Unfortunately NHL GM's are not handed crystal balls when they take the job. Most prudent GM's will trade a 2nd round pick for a guy who has established himself as an NHLer.

We will see what the price is, but goaltending isn't exactly a strong point for the organization so I kinda get it.
|
at the STH meeting i attended, they emphasized that goaltending was a big part of why they got in to the playoffs, not disagreeing with you, but all i'm saying is that they view goaltending as just as fundementally important to the rebuild as drafting and nurturing young players.
