Will also add that Burke said that analytics are part of a multi prong evaluation process. He said there is no stat that measures how a player jumps in front of a puck or a players body language throughout a game. He said you need to put eyeballs on players. He also mentioned that according to advanced stats Russell shouldn't be an NHL player.

At the end of his rant he did say that he believes the flames have the best analytics guy, they just don't make a side show of it like some other teams.

I'm sure this has been discussed but I clearly missed it because this surprises me. I know he burned a year of his ELC but why can't he be assigned to Stockton?

CHL agreement with the NHL. Since Bennett was drafted from the CHL he has to return there if he doesn't stay in the NHL.

His birthdate of June 20, 1996 means he doesn't turn 20 until the year after (2016). He's very young for his draft class, like Jankowski.

Contrast with Poirier, who turned 20 this year thanks to his birthdate of December 14 1994. He's on the older side for his draft class, like Monahan. Had his birthday been on Jan 01 1995 he would have had to spend last year in the CHL too.

Funny how Bennett will be up for his second contract one year before Poirier despite being drafted one year later and playing less regular season games in the NHL this season.

It is the CHL/NHL agreement.

By the terms of the agreement, a player drafted out of the CHL cannot be assigned to the AHL as long as the club that own their CHL rights season is still active, unless they are 20 years old (as of December 31st) or have already played 4 seasons in the CHL.

There is a conditioning stint exemption that the Flames could have used last season as Bennett was recovering from shoulder surgery, but they elected not to use it.

For Bennett it is basically the NHL or back to the OHL next season.

for that multi-pronged player evaluation approach, Burke listed the eyeball test as highest priority, followed by a couple other things (sports psychologist and I can't remember the other), with analytics coming in 4th in order of importance. even Treliving chuckled and let Burke go into the expected rant, from which I got the feeling that the GM values stats a bit more than his boss does.

given how famous Burke's disdain for the topic is, I immediately felt like the question was troll bait especially because the guy basically phrased it like "so we hear lots about corsi nowadays and the flames suck at corsi, so what do you think about corsi? thanks and corsi." didn't sound like someone who actually knew anything about the subject. and the comment about Russell not being an NHL player according to analytics, I really hope Burke was just joking or being facetious, because that claim is not remotely true. I'm just going to assume for the sake of my own sanity that they have a statistics based evaluation model and they just don't like talking about it.

Well, Russell's HERO chart suggests that he's ever so barely a bottom pairing D. I'm sure some of that is influenced by him being paired with Wideman for the last bunch of years but it's definitely true he's not a great possession player. On the flip side, it's also true that when he was on a deep defensive roster in St. Louis, he ended up being a 7th Dman.

Using shot attempts metrics, Russell is one of the worst regular defensemen in the league.

He said Corsi was like a lamp post to a drunk, provides support but no illumination.

Funny.

Just came back from the session tonight.

KK indicated that the new arena would have a larger lower bowl and no 3rd tier (seemingly). He said that some people would be moved and that they would lose some of the bang-for-buck, which I guess is to be expected.

Also said that the arena would have roughly the same capacity and that they'll still have a good number of cheap and accessible tickets.

As for the football stadium he did seem to indicate that it would be a closed roof or maybe even a retractable roof, but that's what we inferred from one of his comments.

Which just goes to show that anyone looking solely at a single stat doesn't see the whole picture.

I'm no KK fan but I have to think the guy just hates these STH meetings because he has nothing he can tell us about the new arena/stadium, he knows he's going to be asked and he knows he's going to be slagged for not saying anything substantive.

I used to be absolutely stoked about this whole arena thing but now it's kind of like the Lotto for me. I wish. I dream. I hope. But ultimately deep down I know it's an utter waste of my time.

I think with analytics we've gone around a few times. Kinda like Bill Murray in the round about in "The Spy Who Knew Too Little"

I just remembered a quick story Treliving had on Hudler in regards to his mentoring. Mentioned that he really pushed Gaudreau and Monahan. Said that sometimes when the kids would make a mistake he would come back to the bench and mutter/curse in czech.

Treliving also shared a story after game two in Vancouver. After the loss on the way back to Calgary Treliving went to the back of the plane where Hudler was sitting in between Monahan and Gaudreau. The kids were struggling in the playoffs so Treliving wanted to have a chat. When Hudler saw Treliving he pretty much said don't worry I got this.
