I would say nearly everyone here was traded either too early (Brett Hull, Drury, Stillman, Morris) or too late (most others).
Anyone that was traded too early was young. Hudler is not young.
Nilsson and Bullard were likely traded at the right time. Both trades helped the Flames win their cup.
This seems like a bit of a win-win scenario though. Either he stays and helps with the development of our young players, or we trade him and get good assets before he regresses/leaves.

You're exactly right, I take Hudler over many on that list, not all but many...now compare Hudler to all the other 6.0 million dollar players out there - he now looks expendable.

Without knowing what any offers are, there's really no point in saying 100% yes or no. We know that Treliving has said that he'll only do it for an overpayment and that's the right attitude to have. If we get offered a second for Hudler, the conversation is over and he shouldn't be traded for that, even a mid first for Hudler is questionable. If we're offered something that doesn't make sense to turn down, then you take it. Hudler has done a lot for this team, made them better, mentored and taught the young guys, led by example, helped the team get into the playoffs when most thought they'd be a lottery team and a lot more. That was last year though. You have to think about what makes the team even better every year moving forward (and now, that's why just a first round pick wouldn't be enough as we'd need a player to step in). Hudler's value is most likely the highest it's ever been and ever will be. IMO, he isn't going to be part of the team when they're competing for a cup and are a perennial team to make the playoffs because his contract is up after this coming season and he'll likely want a longer term contract. He could also help the team moving forward by being one of those leaders on the team that gets the young guys going so his value is even more than his points suggest and that's why it would have to be an overpayment to get him.
If the Flames get a great return for him, you have to do it. I think it would be great to trade Hudler for a kings ransom and then pick up Sharp as the veteran presence to "replace" Hudler. After next season, there's always the possibility of signing Hudler as a UFA.
Every player should be tradable for the right price just don't make a trade for the sake of making a trade

Well, that'd be a piece that would help lessen the pain of moving someone like Hudler.

Backes type player, not backes. He has a ntc and can't imagine him waiving to come here.
Also, what would be the impact of bringing another captain in to the existing leadership group? We have a pretty good thing going and don't want to disrupt that.
If we can shake loose a backes type player from another organization, great, but can't see teams giving up a player like that.
Which goes back to the draft. Backes type players might be gone by the time we pick. Does Boeser qualify as that kind of player? Might be the closest thing barring a major slide or a move up.

What are some examples of Backes-type players? Real question here.

I think every team would want a Backes type of player. If he means that the Flames are specifically interested in acquiring Backes, then it would really depend on what was going the other way. I wouldn't want to mortgage the future for a 31 year old player that will be 34 or 35 by the time this team should be a contender.

Jordan Eberle 6 M until 2018/ 2019 when will be 29.
Last 3 seasons
209 games 68 goals 165 pts
Hudler over same 3 year period
195 games 58 goals 157 pts
Eberle average of 5 season career 24 goals 57
Hudler average of 8 season career 18 goals 46 pts
Eberle career high 34 goals 76 pts
Hudler career high 31 goals 76 pts
-----------
Vrbata 34 is on a 2 year 5m/yr contract with the Canucks....
31 goals 63 pts this season 20 goals 37 pts in 2013/14 very similar to Hudler 17 goals 51 pts in 2013/14... 2 year 5M contract.
Sequin, Taylor Hall, Zetterberg, Duchense, Pavelski, Couture, Lucic.
At the 6M mark there are a lot more consistent guys than Hudler.. Couture and Pavelski just signed their 6M/5year deals and in 2014/15 did not have their career years but their 70 and 67 pts isn't that far off Hudler's career season.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
The discussion on the Fan following Friedman's appearance made it sound like the Flames would specifically want Backes, not just a similar player type. Not a fan of that. I can't stress enough how this team needs to get younger, and stay younger. They can't Colorado this rebuild.

Love the idea of retenting 50%. Could go after some young guys on contending teams.
If there was an auction every year for a team to get another first rounder. Even the 31st pick, I don't think it would ever go for under 4 million.

Good points. But who were those players line mates. Huds only got good ones this year. Eberle had hall, vrbata had more 50 point players that aren't great but better than what hudler had. Seguin had benn, hall had eberle, zetterberg had datsyuk and nyquist, duchene had mackinnon and landeskog, pavelski and couture had each other and Thornton and marleau and lucic had krejci and Bergeron. I'm not trashing those players but hudler had glencross and a 18 year old monahan and backlund.

As should all teams in the League.
As long as we don't trade one of Gaudreau-Monahan-Bennett-Giordano-Brodie, I am fine with this.
Backes is the same age as Hudler btw, 31 this year.
I'd be fine with using some of these extra picks to get a guy like Backes.
Not sure what it would take.

If St.L gets rid of Backes does that mean they are moving into their Bouwmeester re-build phase?

I bet getting Backes would involve giving up Russell and Backlund. Also, St. Louis will probably look to get rid of J-Bo's contract with Backes as well.

This board would LOSE it if Bouwmeester got traded back here.
I almost want it to happen because of how hilarious it would be.

If we're trading Hudler it better for young players and picks.
No point of getting rid of Hudler for another Hudler aged player.

I agree, we shouldn't trade Hudler for a Hudler type player but I think we should do our best to pick up a player like Hudler in a separate deal.
