Since 1990. 25 years.
So sad for his family and friends. Such a needless thing to happen.

Lives In Fear Of Labelling
|
Very sad. Compounded by the fact it's the second officer in the last 6 months slain in the community.
R.I.P. Cst. Daniel Woodall, your watch is over.
"POLICEMAN'S PRAYER"
When I start my tour of duty God,
Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.
Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgement in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.
Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.

To add to this, Woodall's wife IS on twitter, and was tweeting to a friend that she did not have contact with her husband and that she hoped it wasn't "her cop" who had been shot. If she saw his name before she was properly notified, imagine the panic and the horror. You're truly scum if you spread names around like that...looking at you, Calgary sun night reporter @SUNBrianpass.

Such a disgrace. It is easy to bash the Sun, and I generally avoid it anyway because it is so trashy. But this is a new low and I will personally ensure that I never lay eyes on another one of their articles or advertisers again.
I'm not the type to boycott things, but the thought of contributing to their existence by way of mouse clicks or ad views makes me feel sick, and not just a little bit dirty like it used to.

Information on the shooter
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/...936/story.html
more then 50 shots were fired by him a lot through the house. I'm assuming we're going to find out that this is a prohibited weapon.
He was going to be arrested for harassing a family both personally and through the internet.
The house he was in was foreclosed on and he owed the bank over $300,000.
Nothing to link him to the Freeman movement.
Wonder if this was suicide by cop to the extreme.

What even happened to the shooter? Was he inside the burning house the whole time?

And shame on Don Iveson for trying to politicize the entire thing by trying to link it to the gun registry.

It sounds like the guy fired 52 shots in rapid succession through the door.
I would make the initial assumption that he was using a military grade weapon or knockoff with a large capacity magazine, and I'm betting that it wasn't obtained legally.

Shooter burned? I'd say I hope it hurt and he felt it but I imagine he swallowed a gun barrel after the place started burning...

Norman Walter Raddatz was a “deadbeat,” his neighbour says, a man who piled dog feces on his fence to provoke a reaction.
Raddatz, 42, fired over 50 bullets from inside his southwest Edmonton home on Monday night, police say, killing Const. Daniel Woodall and wounding Sgt. Jason Harley. After the shooting, flames engulfed the Ormsby neighbourhood home, burning the house to the ground. A body believed to be that of Raddatz was found in the basement.
|
Quote:
Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said officers arrived at 18620 — 62A Avenue to serve a warrant against Raddatz, following a case of “extreme” criminal harassment, a case of online hatred and bullying of an Edmonton family that dated back to February 2014.
Raddatz was a refrigeration mechanic, Colton said, but he hadn’t seen him leave his house, apart from going to get beer. Before the confrontation, a plainsclothes Woodall approached Colton to ask if his neighbour was a hunter. Colton told the officer he didn’t know.
Ollie Noble, who lived across from Raddatz for a longer period, said her neighbour always tried to cause problems.
“He was kind of distant,” said Ollie Noble, whose home was hit by multiple bullets. “He was just an oddball.

There's no sympathy, I've gotten to the point where I don't care what their motivations are, or that they've had things rough, or their mommy didn't love them enough.
Even with a horrendous prior life, we are not the sum of our experiences, we still have the free will to make choices, and this guy made a choice to shoot up a neighbourhood, kill a cop, and burn down a house killing himself.
I of course put a rider on people with actual mental illnesses, but I don't believe that everyone that commits crimes are mentally ill, I believe that they are selfish, greedy people, but they mad a choice.
There is very little justification for criminal activity in my mind, and if your going to make that call, then I hope, wish that the justice system would come down on you full force.

Quote:
There’s outrage and disappointment at the government for keeping flags at provincial buildings in Calgary at full-staff, following the death of Edmonton Cst. Daniel Woodall.
One former police officer, who can’t be identified because of his position, tells 660News he first noticed the issue at the Calgary Courthouse and went over to talk to sheriffs Wednesday about lowering them.
He said those inside complied with the request, but he was shocked when they were raised again less than an hour later.
“A policeman was killed in the line of duty, essentially serving a court document, it seems reasonable to expect the flags would be lowered to half-mast across the building and at all provincial buildings,” he said. “To me, it’s incredibly disrespectful that someone would commit a deliberate act to raise the flags back up again after they had been lowered.”
“I think it speaks to respect, or a lack of respect for the member who lost his life in the line of duty,” he added. “This was about as tragic an event as you can imagine.”
|
Quote:
Alberta Justice referred to the Protocol Office who issued the following statement, via the Public Affairs Bureau.
“The province has a policy that provides general guidance on when to lower flags to half mast, with room for the Premier to use her discretion to address specific circumstances. In the case of Const. Woodall’s death, the decision was made to lower flags at the Legislature and all provincial buildings in the city of Edmonton, plus at all provincial correctional facilities in the province (where the majority of staff are law enforcement). Flags at all other provincial buildings outside Edmonton remain at full mast. This is consistent with what happened when St. Albert Const. Wynn was killed in the line of duty in January. In that case, flags were lowered at the Legislature and all provincial buildings in St. Albert, plus all provincial correctional facilities.”

I think you would like this saying, "You are what you allow yourself to become." Came from a prof I had, at first I tried to refute that statement but realized it was just semantics. Its an over simplification, but rings true. I like to add, "even if you don't know it." to the end, makes it a truly insidious statement.
Working in an anti hate crime unit is a proud calling, we are poorer for his loss.
