If no one drafts him, then maybe invite him to camp and offer him an AHL deal if he is competitive enough. It would allow us to develop him a little without giving up a contract. We have signed some of these guys in the past when they impress enough, so from his perspective it would be a foot in the door.

Honestly he would likely be better off in another organization with less D depth than the Flames.
Main reason for him to sign with the Flames would have been the signing bonus and 3 years guaranteed contract. If he is going to be limited to an AHL deal he will likely go to an organization that where earning a NHL contract will be easier.
Maybe he comes back to the Flames, but only if they are the only ones offering him an AHL deal.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a team take a chance on Eric Roy with a 6th/7th.

Chabot's hockey sense is much better than Roy's, and his all-around game is miles ahead. He is better at every dimension.
Chabot was criticized last season for his play in his own zone, but he completely turned it around this season. Scouts always knew he had the tools. That's good progression for a 17 year old.
They are not really similar beyond being offence-first players.

All will be forgotten once we announce that we have signed Mike Reilly or Robbie Russo later this off season.

Oilers don't sign Macro Roy:
Jim Matheson @NHLbyMatty
Edm not signing 2013 picks Marco Roy or Jackson Houck, both back in draft. Roy was 56th overall pick (pick from Ducks for Cogliano deal)

It also looks like Martin Reway's rights are still retained by the Habs. Since he left major junior before 20 years old, Habs keep his rights until the 4th June 1st after he was drafted

Yeah, maybe.
I personally don't see our depth as anything to write home about, at least on defense. But I suppose the Roy-level prospects are abundant enough.
Do entry level AHL deals need to be 3 years?

AHL deals are usually 1 year in term.

Any recent cases of players who didn't get signed by their original team, only to get re-drafted and make a good career out of it?

Don't think we'll agree that Chabot "completely turned it around". He's improved for sure, but continues to struggle at times in the defensive zone. Aside from one being a projected first round pick and the other being a late round pick, the biggest difference here IMO is the caliber of the junior organizations involved. Chabot was pulled aside last summer by his coaches and was told he'd need to work on the gaping holes in his game if he wanted to have a real shot at the NHL. I'm not so sure Roy got the same kind of constructive criticism/guidance when he was 17. Feel badly for him in the sense that it was a long road for him to get drafted in the first place. first in his tribe to ever get drafted, growing up more than an hour's drive from the nearest rink, etc. wish him well.

The bolded is a massive difference, however. Roy, or any 5th rounder would be a longshot at best, no matter what the circumstances.
I was hopeful for Roy as well, and wish him the best, but I don't agree that he was somehow left behind from a coaching standpoint. I am reasonably confident that he was told about his weaknesses and asked to improve. Sometimes it just doesn't work out.

Brian Costello thinks there is a good chance that Roy gets picked up in the 2015 draft:
http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/wh...Bn04KI.twitter
Quote:
Perhaps the most prominent name on the back-in-the-draft list is fifth-year Brandon defenseman Eric Roy. The Calgary Flames selected Roy 135th overall in 2013, even though some scouting outlets had him projected in the second round. THN Draft Preview had him rated 54th overall that year, with one scout saying “If you just look at skills, he’d be a slam-dunk first round pick. He’s a really smooth, slick-skating defenseman. But he is wildly inconsistent.” Roy’s most productive WHL season was the year before he was drafted when he had 11 goals and 53 points. He followed that up with seasons of 39, 44 and 45 points (finishing with 200 WHL career points from the blueline), but struggled at times in his own end.
There’s a good chance some NHL team drafts Roy in the later rounds hoping he can refine his game after a few seasons in the AHL.

In that Treliving interview the other day, he didn't rule out signing Roy to an AHL deal if he goes undrafted.
Sounded like the Flames liked lots about him, but didn't want to commit 3 years on an ELC and risk carrying too many contracts going forward.

I don't know. Has that happened much? We see the rights to unsigned guys get traded when the player won't sign with the team that drafted him, but when the team is the one choosing to walk away I don't know if this happens at all.
