Like the belief that one should honour and respect the country they choose to live in? Don't like to take your hat off, or sing/hum/lipsync along to the words, or think about how lucky you are to live in such a great safe place, or honour those that fought and died to protect the freedoms you embrace? Go live in another country. You aren't a Canadian, you're a parasite feeding off the rights and freedoms of others that choose to embrace the greatness of their country and heritage.
I think it's dumb when there are so many international players on the ice and we're not in war time.
I don't know. Seems overly nationalistic to me for a hockey game between two random cities.
I get it for the international competition.

If you're not a flag toting nationalistic putz singing along to the national anthem you should leave Canada. Makes sense

Based on the article, it seems to me that maybe Calgary seems to have a lot of zero tippers for bad service. I would be interested in stats for zero tips as a percentage of all orders/tips by region if there's such a thing (not likely though).

I dunno about you guys with the fancy explanations, but I use the bags to keep things from rolling around. If I buy large or single items (ie: An onion, or cucumber or squash), I don't bag (Caveat: Wet things like celery, lettuce etc get a bag because I don't want the rest of my groceries wet and early molding, but those plastic wrapped iceberg lettuces don't). Usually, I buy in pounds and kilos, so about 4-12 objects. I have no idea how pissed off a cashier would be to receive 2 pounds of Apples unbagged on a conveyor belt. I'm pretty sure I'd be pissed off figuring out how to load a plastic bag of a mishmash of apples, oranges, onions, and tomatoes into a fridge or look in a mishmash of produce to find what I need when cooking.
But hey, I think I'm benefiting from the hygiene aspect too!
From many of the posts I have read in this thread it should have been titled "Things that prove I'm an a-hole".
True. And not just a regular, rounded a-hole that doesn't say "hello" in the hallway, but a disgusting and stinking a-hole proud of it...

Didn't all them soldiers die for my freedom not to sing along? (Disclaimer: I actually sing the anthem because it's fun)
I'll just say that if you are in a setting where the anthem of your country is being played, you should sing along to it. Especially if your country is Canada because Canada rules. Singing the anthem might be too nationalistic to some and might seem "conservative" or "primitive" but I personally don't believe so. There is nothing wrong with honouring the country you live in or are from.
Yeah, obviously it's your right to refuse to sing it. But as with many things, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
I think anthem is supposed to be identity based. Problem is, it doesn't evolve with time and I can see why people stop identifying or associating with it after a while. Another problem is that Canada's identity is essentially the lack of one which may further be a barrier. I have no issues if you don't want to sing or just want to witness it. I view it as the same as others praying before a meal. Do what you want, and I will do the same. We will not impede each other's right to do what we want.
That being said, I can't understand why so many of you immediately associate it with war and jingoism. It's a song. A song that when played is a good time to remember past wars and the sacrifice to give you freedom and a good time to appreciate your country, but isn't limited to that.
I've always appreciated this version... though some say it's disrespectful.
Same as this one.
I enjoy singing it, but I don't really think of the lyrics when I sing it.

The post above me likely hits the nail on the head. There are many who don't identify with the Canada of today, because it is not the Canada they grew up with.
Well that surprises me. Not saying you're wrong however. It's been a while since I worked in the industry. There are definitely a lot of cheapskates, as evidenced by this thread. There's also a lot of above average earners (or regular earners who are good tippers) who drag up the average too. I think that's the biggest problem. There are a lot of people who think 5% to nothing is completely acceptable. So you may get stiffed a few times waiting for a big 25-30% tip on a decent bill to even you out.
Not sure the article is pre oil bust, but it probably doesn't matter. Survery's take a while to put together anyway.
I do know I heard tipping was trending towards 18%. Forget exactly where I heard that, but as several other people posted the same thing, I guess it's one of those things in the consciousness.
The Sun Reader comments are of course expected and hilarious (in a sad way).
I hate tipping greater than 15%. Like someone said before 15% is my flat. It got worse when the "machine" kept putting the 15% after tax or also having a pre-set tip set at 18%-20%.
Singing the anthem isn't jingoistic or militaristic; it's a harmless recognition of our shared identity. If people can't be bothered with even that simple gesture, we have frighteningly weak bonds holding us together. There has to be more to citizenship than pooling taxes and public services.
And it's comical to consider that some of the people eschewing the sentimental group-identity of a nation as beneath them will so happily embrace the sentimental group-identity of a sports team.

Am I the only person that will still tip zero for really bad service?
You guys should try it sometime. It's freeing.
I've given zero tip on a couple occasions. I'd like to think it sent a message that the services was deplorable. However, the server may have thought I was just cheap. So that's something else the cheapskates have ruined.
