Russia will be sanctioned after their players showed a lack of respect to Canada following a 6-1 loss in the final of the world championships in Prague, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said on Monday.

Most of Russia's players left the ice straight after Sunday's defeat and headed for the dressing rooms without waiting for the national anthem of Canada to be played, which goes against the etiquette of the sport.

"Once we arrive back home after the world championships we will look into this question and we will get in touch with those in charge at the Russian Ice Hockey Federation," IIHF president Rene Fasel said in the statement to the TASS news agency.

"The IIHF has its own protocol and some sort of punishment will be handed down.

"When I saw what had happened, I was very upset. In the 29 world championships that I have had the honor of attending, this is the first time I have seen something like this. What the Russian team did was completely out of order.

"On the ice during the game, anything can happen -- collisions, fights. However, after its conclusion, respect to the opposition is always necessary," he added.

Meh, they were out there for the medals and a handshake line. Them having to be out there for the other national anthem is overboard IMO.

It's the rules.

Not all the Russians left, I could see Ovechkin, Malkin and a few others trying to call them back. It was that idiot captain Kovalchuk that led the other players off.

Change the order of when the national anthem is played so the other team doesn't have to be out there while the winning team celebrates.

anthems, medals, etc

I think the point is the have the other team there. Like the Olympics all three medal teams collect their medals at the same time and hear the gold medal winner's anthem.

I understand the point of why they want them there, but what other sport has the losing team on the ice/field while they skate around with the trophy?

It would suck to be on the losing team and have to watch all that while waiting until the end for the anthem.

Lots, almost all international sports like soccer, rugby, cricket etc..
Tennis the runner-up is standing right there and even gets interviewed.

When the Canadian junior kids lose, they're right there til the end.

Cause even in defeat, the silver medal winning flag is being raised to the rafters, who walks away from that?

Russian players, such as Kulemin and Yakovlev, claimed it was a misunderstanding, as they all were confused about what they were supposed to do.

I.tend to believe them as it would be kinda senseless to shake hands and stay for medals and then suddenly walk from the anthem to show some sudden disrespect.

If someone said before the tournament, "during one of the medal games one of the losing teams will make the classless move of leaving before the winning teams' anthem is played. Furthermore, that team will be lead off the ice by their captain."

Who would you guess the classless team was? Misunderstanding my butt

And the Russian and Euro-based players would know the routine better than anyone.

The excuse just doesnt wash. How do Malkin and Ovechkin know and not Kovalchuk and the rest?

In fairness to the Russians the ceremonies at game's end went on forever.
I thought to myself, "Weird, no anthem. Maybe they don't do that anymore."

Oh! No argument there. The ending of the WHC is like watching the end of the The Return of the King.

All this season, I've found myself liking and respecting Ovechkin more and more.

Yesterday seals it for me.

My name is Barnet Flame and I like Alexander Ovechkin.

Didn't even realize this happened, the dummy bartender flipped the game over 5 seconds after it ended to some no name golf tournament, due to the 30 retiree dudes sitting up at the bar. Who flips the feed before the medals/anthem??

It's always like that! The Russians won last year! The Finns are still standing there.
