I think one of Backlund or Granlund is moved this summer. Flames have plenty of depth at the position with Monahan, Bennett, Stajan, Jooris, Arnold in addition to those 2. If Backs will sign a reasonable deal then perhaps he stays. At 26 he is a solid veteran with Stajan and our 2 building blocks. Granlund did show he can play a 2 way game and a summer getting stronger and better on faceoffs he will be a sure fire NHL regular next year.

Backlund is the perfect 2nd line center stop gap until Bennett eventually becomes it.

I think Bennett becomes that as early as next year though so is there need for the stop gap?

Yes I think you try to shelter Sam a bit in his first full season. Maybe he pulls a Monahan and doesn't need it, or maybe he doesn't and you regret shipping off a perfectly adequate #3 centre who can fulfill #2C duties for a couple years

Does anyone know which Flames prospects require waivers starting next year?

The second this team trades Backlund, people are going to realize how much he meant to this team.
Would be a huge mistake.

I agree. I still think it's going to happen though. He'll probably be gone by the start of the 2016-17 season at the latest.

I agree with your sentiment that he should be sheltered, but we also have Stajan for that.
Having said that, I think the deadline might be a better time to move Backlund. Keep him here for the first 50 games while we see how Bennett is doing, then make a deadline trade.

I really like Backlund. And I really like that Backlund loves being a Flame.
But the bottom line for me is that, once Bennett is up to speed on the 2nd line, we need size, physicality, and solid face-offs from that #3 C position. And I don't think Backlund is that guy.
He would fetch a real good return as well.

If you're going to trade Backlund, you do it at the draft or before the season starts at some point. If the Flames are doing great with Backlund on the team, why would you trade him and disrupt chemistry especially if you're in a playoff spot. If the team is well out of the playoffs, I could see them moving players though.
I do think that Backlund will be dealt at the draft either for a young defensemen like Gelinas or packaged with a pick/picks to move up.

I wonder if the Flames will try to sign Shawn Matthias. Big body, versatile, still just 27 and decent depth scorer, but somewhat soft and terrible at face offs.

Why? Shore could pretty much be that player.

If the Flames are going to make trades this off-season Backlund is our biggest asset outside players that nobody wants to trade. I like Backlund but his departure will not crush the team. Plus he misses almost a quarter of every season with injury.

Bennett is going to earn the 2nd line center role before Backlund is traded. Remember, "Always earned, never given". If Backlund is dealt it will be no sooner than next season's trade deadline, but I suspect he'll still be a Flame after that deadline. Always good to have depth up the middle.
What we have seen from Bennett so far is very encouraging, but let's see how he does in the NHL over the course of a full season before we declare Backlund expendable.

I like Backlund, but his offense does not fit a second line C role. He is a very good third line C. I really don't see the correlation with Bennett and Backlund. You can have both on the same team IMO. Bennett most likely will end up being a #1 C, while Monahan a very, very good second line C and then Backlund at #3 is perfect. Stajan at #4 and Flames are set.

When Backs was centering the Bouma-Jones line, it was our best 5vs5 checking line, by far. Better than the checking lines Stajan was centering later too.
When Backs was centering the Bennett-Colborne line, it was our best 5vs5 scoring line.
Until one of our other centers actually forces our hand to displace him in the top 9, he's too valuable on the ice. We do have quality prospects in Granlund, Jankowski, and Arnold who could force our hand to make a move - but they haven't yet. One hasn't made an NHL debut, one didn't even play an NHL game this year, and ome is still a fringe NHLer who had a hot run early in the season and fizzled out hard since, and whereas Backlund is a good possession player, Granlund is one of our worst right now. You don't improve as a team by trading AWAY your best corsi guy.

By your logic we should trade Giordano too. He's a bigger asset and also misses a quarter of every season and we made it to the second round without him.

I think there is room for both of them too, but people seem to think that Bennett makes him expendable. That was my response to them.

But we don't have that. It doesn't make a lot of sense to be thinking about trading Backlund before we even have a potential replacement in the organization.
It would be nice if Backlund was a couple inches bigger and a little better at faceoffs, but until we acquire a player that plays a two-way game as well as he does, in addition to those other qualities, Backlund will play a big role for this team.
