Shutting him down for the rest of the game as a precaution was a safe bet. Even if it was only precautionary. Observe him to ensure he is okay instead of trusting him to be honest in a situation where a guy may not be honest with himself or the trainers.

You know Buff the definition/standard of concussion is loose enough that, at least in my opinion, it absolutely is one of the diagnoses you can often make watching on TV (assuming you get the right video of the face or player responses after the injury). A player getting hit to the head and appearing to be dazed most likely has an American Academy of Neurology grade I concussion. Theses episodes of 'getting your bell rung' have been historically underdiagnosed and there is a movement towards calling them all concussions, albeit minor. But to be clear, if a child in a sporting event appears dazed after a head shot, they are done for that day at least. In pro sports (as I mentioned with Edelman, honestly just one of many obvious examples, and I actually did work with an NFL team for some time), how this is handled varies from staff to staff and case by case.

Speculation: by the way he was holding himself, I think it's a rib injury to Ferland.

I'm pretty sure he was just really hangry and couldn't focus.

I never suggested or speculated on Ferland's injury. I don't think we ever got a clear shot of what exactly was hurt. I don't think they'd play him Sunday if he had a concussion.

Having dealt with Thorne (one of the Flames staff guys) a couple of times, I'm under the impression that he's a turbo-type A. He -seems- to not be the type of guy that will go full NG-Oiler on Souray. While this means next to nothing in the real world, I personally am not terribly worried about them sending Ferkland out if he's not able to go.

I would wager that its an oblique injury....just by the way he was sitting and then the way he reached around.

The NFL is a joke when it comes to changing their protocols around player behavior, concussions, discipline, etc. They put out one heck of an entertaining product, but the rest is a joke.
And you can't possibly be serious about diagnosing something thru a TV. As many posters have already said, they've had their bell rung with no concussion afterwards. I too had an incident during a men's league game where I was kinda getting angled off but turned around at the same time. I ended up smacking the back of my head against the turnbuckle and got knocked out for a few seconds (picture Chara/Pacioretty). Ref stopped the game, and you can bet your ass I was dazed. Everyone got extremely worried, but I was fine. Not even a headache the next day.
Another time, I was playing D and skating backwards when (and I swear this is the truth) I hit a rut in the ice. There is not a chance in hell I tripped over my own feet. I fell directly backwards obviously and bumped my head off the ice. It didn't even hurt, but the ref recommended I sit out since he said I looked dazed. The next day, I had a headache and it lasted a few days.
So it's luck of the draw when it comes to head hits. You can't diagnose anything based on how it looks.

This is the problem with concussion management in the past. Pretty much every sport has a "tough it out" mentality, and not a lot was known in regards to diagnosing a concussion - and it's still pretty subjective.
Here is the SCAT testing used for evaluating a player. This is only HALF OF evaluation and baseline testing, the rest being physical testing like reaction time, etc - http://www.cces.ca/files/pdfs/SCAT2%5B1%5D.pdf
You can see there are scores like the GCS, so in a scenario like you described you likely would have displayed some signs of a concussion.
The trouble we still have is deeming whether a player needs to sit out and undergo testing. This is compounded by the fact the players almost always lie about how they're feeling.
Again, as mentioned, we have to assume the medical staff did the right thing and it's not a concussion if he's playing Sunday.

Glad to hear ferland will be in... I hope hudler gets in as well. He looked to get his game back especially in game 6 vs the Canucks so it sucks he's battling yet another injury now.
Johnny is going to be a pissed off player tomorrow... Which does not bode well for the ducks. He plays with so much intensity and increasing it only makes him more effective. I'm confident he'll have a hell of a game tomorrow.

I think Hudler was playing injured the entire series and the hit or what happened to him could've possibly made it worst. though that doesn't sound like the case as Hartley says both players should be good to go on Sunday night.

Had an idea!

I agree with the posters that say if he plays there is no way he has a concussion.
The Flames would never risk it, nor would the doctors sign off on it.

Wow! Good for him. Even with all this news trickling in, I'll still be shocked if he actually plays a game this season.

Gio's presence should be good for the team's morale.
Having Diaz back in would also be good. Will allow the third pairing to tackle more minutes compared to right now
