Exactly. Hartley wouldn't be able to overrule the doctors if there was concussion concerns, and the doctors themselves would have to thoroughly test Ferland.

IF he plays Sunday, its not a concussion.

IIRC he said Giordano was day to day when he obviously wasn't. I think he even took the pre game skate just so the opposition could be kept off guard. I'll believe Ferland/Hudler are playing when it happens.

I really think the days of guys with concussions being rushed back are in the past. Considering all of the lawsuits and medical research done on concussions in recent years, you'd have to be psychotic to push guys with concussions.

Was super worried about Ferland. More I think about it maybe his was more like a ufc knockout, flush to the jaw. Which would be better obviously than the hockey blindsides that can happen

As a neurosurgeon I do wish what you say was true. Unfortunately winning trumps everything.

Just look at the Patriots and Julian Edelman. Clear cut concussion. And on the biggest stage, brought back into the game. And that's with all the media storm and litigation surrounding NFL's concussion problems.

That said, if Ferland had a concussion, from what I superficially see of the Flames, I do not think they would play him.

Hmm that is discouraging. Really don't see what the point of playing a concussed player, beyond the humane aspect and future potential litigation. The player is not playing anywhere close to a 100% and you are risking their future effectiveness or even their career. Seems like a no reward/high risk gamble....

Ferland looked like he got his bell rung for sure but people need to realise it doesn't mean a long term concussion, lots of people are perfectly fine an hour or so after a bit of wooziness.

As a former crappy amateur boxer I got tagged a lot, never completely knocked out but I definitely had a temporary loss of brain function a few times. As far as I know I never had a concussion symptom afterwards though.

I think you underestimate concussions. Doesn't matter if it was a very small concussion, it's thought that it takes at LEAST 1-2 weeks for ATP stores to recover. That, and "temporary loss of brain function" would be more than a mild concussion.

Suffice to say that if he plays Sunday it's not a concussion.
(Or else risks mild forms of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-impact_syndrome - which is thought to be the cause of the long term effects of concussion)

Yeah I got nearly knocked out in hockey and didn't get a concussion. A hit from behind that sent me flying into the boards, thought I went unconscious and the doctors said no concussion. Hope like heck Ferland was just shaken up, what I found is usually the worst hits are the completely unexpected ones which is exactly what happened to Ferland. When the brain is not ready for trauma it's a lot easier to get shaken up.

Just because a player took a hit to the head and appeared to be dazed doesn't mean he had a concussion. You also can't diagnose a concussion from watching on TV. With all the attention concussions are getting in pro sports now I would be surprised if he had a concussion and played on Sunday (or even practiced today).

Shutting him down for the rest of the game as a precaution was a safe bet. Even if it was only precautionary. Observe him to ensure he is okay instead of trusting him to be honest in a situation where a guy may not be honest with himself or the trainers.

Hartley has too much class to play unfit players especially a concussed player.
If Ferland plays it is because the medical staff clears him 100% that he is showing no further signs of a concussion.
Hopefully Hudler is good to go, if not that will be a huge loss.

Listening to Hartleys interview, it sounded cheeky when responding to Ferlands head. It was almost as if he was implying he was banged up but it wasnt his head.
No doubt he had his bell rung a couple times however watching him on the bench was more of a pissed off look than a confused look.

Why would you think that? All I said was getting your bell rung doesn't mean your concussed long term. And my loss of brain function from getting popped in a ring was me having to concentrate on "staying on my feet" or thinking "don't look stupid trying to find my corner" Bomber(our coach) used to teach us "when your in trouble, cover up and think about your knee's.

Stuff like that lasted 5-10 seconds for me and I was back to normal, no lasting brain effects at all.

I like Roger Millions but didn't he realize that Hudler left because someone slashed his hand? Of course he is walking properly. Last time I checked people walk with their feet not with their hand.

As for Ferland. I didn't think he had a bad concussion last game. He got woozy a little but Hartley is probably detecting a big frustration on Ferland especially after he tried hitting Thompson and kind of missed. They were already behind by 3 or 4 goals so Hartley decided he's done for the night and avoid getting injured. I can see Ferland trying to get rid of frustration and start throwing hit wildly.

As for Gaudreau, I bet he'll be so ticked off after sitting out in the third period. Hartley sat him out in the third not because he was playing bad. Gaudreau is a competitor so I am sure he's not very happy.

Not sure if Bouma is going to be available in this round. It would be nice to have him back to play with Jooris and Bollig.

Would like to add to all the concussion handwringing, the NHL has protocols to handle potential concussions.

http://sportsdocuments.com/nhl-proto...nd-management/

If Ferland had any hint of a concussion the team is required to sit him out. This is as much a NHLPA requirement as it is a league directive.

Sounds a lot like Crosby's "neck" injury.

I'm pretty sure that the new CBA includes more precise protocols and much more stringent enforcements for handling concussion symptoms than the previous one, which was in place when Crosby suffered his neck injury.

The commentators speculated a slash to the hand at the time, but they were only guessing. Most of the (extremely sketchy) evidence suggests it might be his back or side or hip.
