Those are just show/promotional cars for the most part. Some tuner company does that to advertise their brand because it catches your attention. sometimes it looks goofy or unusable, but there are also cities in the states that are SO flat and have nice even asphalt.
I think people can do whatever they like to their property.... If I customized an old porsche and some uppity guy came up to lecture me, I'd tell him to go F himself.
People have fun working on cars, sometimes it's odd customization, sometimes it's super nice restorations. It takes work, effort, and cash, and it is their call.
There is a Lambo in Mission area that looks like total garbage. Crappy parts all over and the tuner company advertised all over. It's worth a laugh, then you move on. They got my attention for a moment to read their brand name though.

Rarely can style be taught, .. it can gradually be appreciated though. I've learned those who really know, are like a timely scotch.
Drive German, Drink French, Dress Italian.

I've always wanted to pitch a show to SPEED called "rescue my ride." Where they take a polak'd out car, and restore it to it's original OEM glory. Sure let the kiddos destroy all the Civic's and WRX's they want, have at 'er. They're a dime a dozen, and don't impress anyone, except for the guys who wanna wrap their car with a bunch of lame Sparco, Type R decals, and fake vents. But guys that took total future classics like the last gen RX-7's, Mister2's, Supra's, and yes, even old 944's and 911's don't realize the type of money they are throwing away, and the damage they are doing to automotive history by destroying these cars with their tacky bolt on/stick on garbage. Sure it's your money and car, but you're incredibly short sighted, and tactless for doing it.
And this isn't an 'old guy' thing. In the 90's when my friends were destroying their cars with tacky body kits, teal heartbeat pinstriping, and no fear decals, while I was doing everything in my power to keep my cars 100% factory. When CD players got big in cars, I would always install mine in the glovebox, so I didn't wreck the flow of the OEM deck. It just seemed wrong to hack up a car and disturb the natural flow of it's design.
Automakers spend billions, and have some of the best engineers on the planet designing these things, and some kid thinks a 'sick ass' deck with blinking disco lights all over it improves the look of the car. That like buying a $3000 bespoke suit, and wearing it with a novelty tuxedo T-shirt.
Driving enthusiasts have one rule with mods. "If it doesn't make it go faster, or stop faster, it isn't needed." Image enthusiasts put a bunch of idiotic body kits and wings all over the car, plaster it with vinyl carbon fauxber, slam them so they are only driveable on runways, and put on gigantic wheels that slow the thing down to uselessness in pretty much any driving condition. Sure, it's your ride. But the guys that drive the cars you really lust for.... think you're lame guys, sorry.
Besides tinting my windows, my GTI has 2 mods. A stage 2 APR tune that takes it to 320 HP and 396 foot pounds of torque. (Go fast mod.) Swapping out the incredibly light factory wheels does nothing, as pretty much no wheel is lighter than the factory wheels that are going to cost less than $1200 a corner.
And a set of Michelin Pilot SS's. (Stop fast/grip better mod.)
My rather plain, unassuming GTI:

And I put a grand total of $3200 in mods in mine.
I'm in it for the driving experience, not the "Let's hang around a Shell station and talk about out completely undrivable cars experience." The hilarious irony of modern day image modders, is in an attempt to look fast, the slow their rides down in every aspect. There is a word for that. Posing.
"You can't lose on 22's...." True enough, unless of course your talking about your quarter mile time, fuel economy, and cornering ability. Besides that, your such a boss..... chief.

Did you get your tune done at Concept1? I want to tune my wife's 2014 Passat and it's only $900 for an extra like 60 hp (she has the 1.8 turbo). Is that a fairly risk-free thing to do in your opinion? Any horror stories from when you worked at VW?

I have a 2006 Hyundai Elantra (my car) and a 2010 Dodge Journey (baby-mobile, picked up used last year).
Next year I get to buy a new car for myself, looking forward to it! Won't be something as exciting as an Aston Martin though.

I'm lame and cheap. But I have a love for the tiny little hatchbacks. There's just something fun about tossing a tiny car around corners.
If money were no object I'd have a diesel VW Golf (Are those an option anymore? Pylon?), but for now I drive a Mazda 2... because it's a lame and cheap little hatch back that's at least a little bit fun to drive.
I really miss the Civic hatchbacks from 10-15 years ago as well, current crop get's into coupe territory and takes away from some of the appeal of smaller cars.

Hatchbacks are the absolute most underrated cars out there, at least in North America. They are starting to catch on more here, but in Europe they dominate. Sedans make no sense whatsoever in terms of practicality in comparison with hatchbacks once you own one. They are the Swiss army knife of cars. My daily driver will always be one. Flip down the seats, and there's pretty much nothing you can't haul. Their shorter length because of the lack of a trunk over hang, is great for urban parking too. Plus you can get some serious budget hotrods now when you look at the GTI, Focus ST, and Mazdaspeed 3. Great sleeper pocket rockets.
I actually really dig some of the micro hatchbacks to, like the Scion iQ, Yaris, Micra and Smart Cars (Sorry, no love for the FIAT's, they are gross.). If I was a straight up, inner city urban dweller, that is what I would own.

^I absolutely love hatchbacks. What bugs me besides the already limited availability is the fact that their are so few versions available in an AWD in North America.
Although I do like the Fiats. That abarth sounds like a sweet city car.

They really are damn near perfect for the city. But I'm also nostalgic for my first car, a geo metro hatchback.
On the one hand I can understand why a family of 4 might want something bigger, but even the Mazda 3's seem like plenty of car for most commuters needs. The love for giant trucks/SUVs in the city I will never understand.

Funnily enough, hatchbacks are actually extremely popular....it's just that people are buying ones that have been stuffed with fat and jacked up.

I tuned our GTI at Concept 1 with no issues. Check out Jetta 1.8t forums for the answer on reliability for that model. I know the later 2.0tsi is solid and I've heard it's the same for that motor.

I've done APR tunes on about 6 or 7 VW's, and never had a problem either. In fact you end up getting substantially better fuel economy as well. Like 15% better if that makes any sense whatsoever given the power gain. I have a theory that if you over boost it high enough to around 745 lbs of boost, and 4000-4500 HP it will actually run on air, manufacture gasoline, and and save the worlds energy crisis.
When I suggested this, Ken at Concept 1 looked at me sideways, rolled his eyes, and walked away while shaking his head. He just doesn't understand the sciencing I guess.
Ask for Ken @ Concept 1. He's an awesome dude, and has forgotten more about VW/Audi than half the guys that build them will ever know.

Not a bad price for a 300 HP V12, german GT car with 120,000 kms. One of the last of the coke-head cars. These were about $130,000 CDN new. Heaven forbid you have to replace a dome light bulb though, you'd probably have to write the car off.
