Technically, there's a better chance of getting Malkin than Crosby with these rumors.
I'm sure most would agree the likelihood is near nil and the merit wouldn't make sense unless somehow the Pens felt very generous but that's just what the fans will do; discuss until the topic blows over even if there is a consensus.
Not to mention the topic isn't limited to trading for Malkin but the value of if he were to come as a UFA with the same contract. Again, that's not going to happen but what else is a discussion board for if not the debate and exchange of opinions?

If Gretzky was traded, anyone has the potential to be traded.
The price just has to be right.

Right, because nothing else in the two posts you cherry picked lines from covered what you took issue with.

Saying that a certain topic is pointless is policing? Well if that's the case you're under arrest for this post.

I stand by what I said: The price we'd need to pay to land Malkin would 100% be counterproductive to our rebuild. He's a top thee player in the league, and would take a king's ransom to trade for that would decimate our roster.
If you find that statement to be untrue, feel free to point out why that would be.

I like Backes and Oshie to PIT for Malkin + something relatively minor... I think that helps both teams a lot.

True, but let's not forget which screwball organization traded him in his prime...

For the record, I don't think the Flames would even be in the hunt for him or if he'd waive his NTC to come here but let's go with it anyway...
Unless you have inside information on what the pens would want for Malkin, you don't know what we'd have to give up to get him. Bad trades happen all the time, at the time would anyone have thought we would take a few spare parts (at the time because of everyone traded Stajan is the best of the bunch) in return for Dion? No, the pens may want quantity players and we have a lot of young players to pick from. And saying that he's a top 3 player in the league but picking him up would be counterproductive? He would help this team right now and the goal is to win. If Malkin was traded 1for1 for Jones, would that be bad for the team or counter productive?
No one knows what it would take to trade for him, you can speculate but there are lots of trades that have gone down that look completely one sided. Malkin may even be the next dion and turn out to be crap for the next team he plays for and they might want to to trade him too. No one really knows so don't say things like "100% counterproductive"

To add a player like that, it would involve changing the future core of the team, not add to it. The future core is what is so damned exciting about the Flames.
Thanks, but no thanks.

Your not landing Malkin for spare parts. The price would be high and I agree it likely wouldn't make sense for us given where we are at in our rebuild. If you could pull off the deal without trading any of our core young guys I'd be all for it but I don't see how that would be possible.

Malkin doesn't put us over the top in two years when we really need that trade to pay off. Our younger guys will be equal to his skill level or better, given that Malkin will be on the wrong-side of 30 at that point. Don't get me wrong - he'll still be extremely good, but not worth the cost it would be to get him here.
May as well try to poach a guy of his ilk in the off-season. I have no doubt players are going to start wanting to play in Calgary with our upward trend.

Malkin and Tarasenko together for the Blues would be deadly.

I would pass on Malkin for sure. Great player but do not want to part with the assets it would take to get him.
To me, the Flames should be focusing on good young defensemen. Franson will be available via UFA but I think some packages could be put together to entice some teams to move a blueliner or two. Not sure who those guys are, would need to research a little more but I think that should be the focus.

Again, he's a top 3 player in the league, and the cost would be huge. Not buying the "we don't know for sure" card. We know... the price would be extremely costly and would definitely cost several of our young assets and or first round pick(s) that we would be foolish to give up for one player at this stage in our rebuild.

Ya I could totally see him going to the Blues over anyone. They have surplus forwards to deal that could help Pittsburgh and are in need of a true #1 C.
Berglund+Backes+Fabbri+1st for Malkin
They could totally afford it given their depth

Franson is real close to re-signing in Nashville apparently.

I think maybe he initially planned on it, but then Laviollette basically played him less than 10 mins a game.
I would bet he isn't so keen to sign there anymore.

What's that bias called when you overvalue what you have compared to what you don't have?
