Off topic, but does anyone else find it ironic that Burke is always looking extremely dishevelled, yet he's got rules like no high numbers? I presume the rule is in place to maintain a professional-level looking hockey team. Not sure if the rule is still around, but just sort of curious that as a face of the Flames he's always got a huge dip in, tie around his neck, collar undone, and hair (usually) look rough.

There is no logical explanation for "no high numbers" policy.

Sure there is. He's trying to promote a team first mentality and putting the team ahead of the individual. That seems logical to me.

Whether or not you or I agree with that logic is another story.

Pretty hard to argue with it right now. Countless factors have led to sense of team - which is one basis for the Flames success this year. I assume that is one small factor

Lol, that's a pretty big area! Lots of people grew up in that area.

Richardson is from Belleville and Stajan played there with Bulls but that doesn't necessarily mean Belleville is the obvious link. I tend to think they both must have cottages or go golfing in the same area in the summers. Richardson's cottage is in Bath, ON near Kingston.

The rule isn't about "professional looking" IMO. It's about Burke's view of hockey tradition, and high numbers being a "look at me" thing.

Now that I think about it, makes sense. I remember 99, 87, 66 etc cuz they stood out. Lower numbers are worn by multiple guys on multiple teams. Messier? I'd have to look up his number.

Of course it's different for Flames, I remember most of their numbers, low or high. Other teams not so much.

It's a big area, but the community of people in elite level hockey is pretty small. Safe to say they crossed paths a few times growing up I would think.

For all the media stuff and the fan reactions and notwithstanding the statements made by each team earlier in the series, I really never got the sense in this series that these teams particularly disliked each other all that much.
PS - As noted earlier, to hockey players, if your last name is Campbell, you are Soupy and that's the end of it. Could be anyone with the surname Campbell.

Messier was always 11, unless he picked a different number for his stint in Vancouver.

They may or may not not even know each other extremely well - but if they are both invited to Soupy's wedding (I thought of Brian Campbell as well) it's a pretty easy thing to say in a lineup.
I'm more at a loss as to how they'd both be friends with Campbell (if it's Brian).

I think they all do the BioSteel training camp in the summer, IIRC from the videos Cammy, BigErn, Gio and Staj all did it last year.

One of our best players in the playoffs was wearing 63. A key contributor was wearing 79. There's nothing about the numbers on the backs that makes this team what it is. It's a silly rule.

Also, if you're not going to tie up your tie, just take it off. No one is going to be bothered if you don't have a tie on, and it looks way less stupid than having it hanging around your neck.

Yeah something tells me that high numbers mean jack sh** when it comes to playing like a team. Our guys are playing like a close group of guys, we haven't seen this much teamwork since 2004, yet we seem to have quite a number of high numbers!! What are we to do???

Burke is starting to remind me of my Grandfather who became more cantankerous as he got older. He set his own style and had that look of crazy, disapproval and love all rolled into one.
