And why does it matter?
It is hockey related. Nothing wrong with it being on this part of the board. You can simply ignore the thread.

For anyone wondering this thread is basically what GamerGate is like, only more benign.
And Jammies basically won the thread earlier. We are now at the point where we have a few voices going, "But it was fun and I don't want it to end." about the flashing which requires them to ignore the issues raised.
I believe that this incarnation of the Red Mile is tainted because we have "people" trying to recreate the original from a fetishized legend of the original. And if this is the current atmosphere at only five games in there is a very real chance that the issues present will only be magnified as time goes on, which means that law enforcement will have to crack down on the whole Red Mile idea.

Flames organization tells fans to stop harassing women on the Red Mile
Quote:
Calgary Flames executives Ken King and Brian Burke are asking hockey fans along the Red Mile to stop behaving in an illegal, offensive manner after reports of sexual harassment, violent language and intimidation of women during playoff games.
“Our view is that if you’re a true Flames fan, you are not engaging in this kind of behaviour,” CEO King told the Herald Thursday just before leaving for Vancouver for Game 5 in the playoff series.
“We want to make it clear, do not do this stuff, ever. And for goodness sake don’t do it in our name because that’s not our culture, that’s not our organization.”
Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke added: “This kind of behaviour has nothing to do with us, nothing to do with hockey. This is no way to treat women. I ask that everyone keeps their red on, and treat each other with respect.”

What if that post is on their personal Mount Rushmore of stupidity? What if it becomes their new calling card for the site? I have to look ...
And then every time someone inducts a new post into the CP Posting Hall of Shame, I think to myself: they couldn't possibly out-do this one. It's not possible. But, these posters are far too reliable and every time they reach a new level of idiocy. It never fails. A couple of people have outdone themselves multiple times in this thread.

Show your knob for bob.
Does anyone remember the red mile in 2006?
It was odd. It was like you only had the shirts off for kippersoff people and cops gave out tickets for jaywalking. It was fake, so is this.
The random calgarian hasn't gotten on board yet and you need those people to creat that critical mass that made it so awesome.

EDIT: You were responding to FlamesAddiction's post, so perhaps I'm being a bit unfair in my sarcastic response. The fact is (and apologies if this is the exact point that you were trying to make), the existence of a real threat to the sexual integrity of female Flames fans is exactly what distinguishes Red Mile ######baggery from the large tattooed man with a leather jacket.
|
The question was meant to be rhetorical.
And yes, the existence of a real threat, rather than feeling uncomfortable or threatened is the reason to act (or not act as the case may be) is the exact point I was trying to make.

Have there been any issues so far this playoffs besides the news reporter incidents or is this all just being proactive if the Flames go on a good run?
I was at the Red Mile for a beer after game 4 and my wife watched game 3 there as well. It seems tame so far.

Let them go past the 1st round first before you start comparing it. There was no Red Mile at Game 5 in the first round in '04.

I have a different perspective on the issue, Jiri. The same arguments, points, and counterpoints that are in this thread have popped up in a lot of places before appearing here: Cracked, Slate, Salon, etc. Sometimes the points are made in the context of discussing gamergate, sometimes in response to a random video of street harassment in another country, sometimes in response to an Op-Ed in the mainstream media. The contexts in which the arguments arise vary - be it video games, viral video or news piece - but the arguments themselves don't; they seem divorced from the context. It appears to be several groups on both sides of the debate agitating for a platform wherever they can find it and the context - here hockey- just doesn't seem to matter. So I don't think the discussion is hockey related and I come to FOI for pure, unadulterated hockey fun.
If that didn't matter, why have the Off-Topic Forum?

Walking home from the bar the last couple games I have noticed two things from the Red Mile:
1 - the vast majority of Red Mile attendees were most likely not 18 during the '04 run so they had really only heard of the legend. Heck, most probably weren't 18 in '09. They heard all about how awesome it was and are trying to replicate. It's not organic at all.
2 - the vast majority of Red Mile attendees are not everyday Flames fans. They got the shirt or the jersey but are there because its the playoffs and it will be packed on 17th. It is like an early Stampede and a reason to get trashed. The amount of people at the bar I was at were not watching the game, or were but were really obnoxious about it.
Is this type of behavior disrespectful? Absolutely
Are these guys losers? Yes
Can a bunch of protesters change their behavior? no
As a woman who would take offense to this activity, should you attend 17 Ave after the games? probably not.
