Well, they also go into the bar and try to talk to girls and pretend to be interested in what they say because "hey, layup - easy score".
eta: It's "case in point".

Oh 100%.
Don't pretend like every person (guy or girl) doesn't have their own horny loser moments. One night stands, friend with benefits etc...
I just disagree with the notion that the Red Mile is some Mecca for those in that state... at least so far. Arguably, it was in '04.

As for the rest of my posts after I "rested my case" if you will, I'm just having fun. Nothing hateful or mean was said towards anyone. I think some people might be getting a little too sensitive to posts on an internet message board.

Cognizant.
Not that I'm against having fun, but I don't think this is one of those threads where flippant comments should be made. Rather insensitive.

You're individual experience doesn't really matter. That's just anecdotal evidence. I will also assume that you are a little insensitive to these matters just by your comments today, so I have a feeling you wouldn't be picking up on what others found disturbing or sexually aggressive.

I know it doesn't but imagine if you went to some awesome event where everyone appeared to be having an absolutely amazing time, high fiving and cheering and really personifying what the event should be and you're stoked cause this is an event you've been waiting for since you were in junior high and couldn't attend and then the next day the front page of the news says it was actually full of sexual harassment.
Would you not speak up and say "wtf?". Sure I worded it poorly and I should have posted like I posted after I got called out by Nyah. Yeah I guess you can say I was being insensitive. It's an internet message board, not a conference on sexual harassment. I still stand by the fact that none of what I said belittled the case by case occurrences of sexual harassment and I feel embarrassed as someone who attended and plans to keep attending, that #### like that actually happened. Actually I'm still a bit dumbfounded that it does and doesn't end in a serious beat down.

This^^
While the thread started out as red-mile related, it has morphed into a sexual harassment/gender relations discussion devoid of fun hockey talk.
It's worth talking about, but not on the FOI.

I am supportive that the Red Mile should not be a place women feel uncomfortable....
but between the police coming out and telling people not to go to 17th, to anti-harassment groups protesting, to all the various groups fighting, all of the fun and random spontaneity has been sucked out of this thing.
I don't go to see boobs, I go to run around and high five and cheer, and hear horns blasting, and drink some beers. Now it feels like all that magic is gone.
I dunno, I don't have a solution, but I just miss the days when people could celebrate in the streets without feeling like a bad person about it.

Just how observant and perceptive is the average inebriated person (of which there are many on the Red Mile) in a sea of humanity where the harassers are probably not advertising their ass grabbing? You might think you're on top of everything when you're drunk, but you're not. Even if a person is sober, it's impossible to catch everything that is happening.

The Red Mile pertains to the Calgary Flames and our fans. It looks like the thread is staying. Multiple moderators have posted in it. No amount of font changes will alter that.

I think that magic was due to its spontaneity. Even when Edmonton and Ottawa tried to do the same kind of thing in their runs shortly after it just seemed so contrived. If it's manufactured or is trying to recreate something it'll lose that magic. I don't think it's anything to do with anti-harassment groups or police or anything like that.
The boobs, especially at the beginning last time, were sort of a by-product of the elation. I think perhaps the problem this time around might be that too many people go primarily for that reason, therefore you get more overt sexual harassment.

Yup I agree 100%.it does not help that the Media and Flames Org also promote the Red Mile rather then something organic that occurred.

Discussing issues like this is how social norms are defined and ultimately enforced: by collective disapproval. The only ones who should have strong negative reactions to this issue being raised are those who don't think there is anything wrong with this kind of harassment, either because they (mistakenly) don't think it is harassment, or don't care because they are self-centred misogynist d-bags. Is that you?
*CHL we're not in court, there are shades of meaning to the word "harassment" and the term "sexual harassment". The English language is not subject to your pettifoggery and nitpickery. Nobody is going to be citing post #743 in this thread in court.
** People are also way too uptight about nudity, but in the context of our society being that prudish, the right of someone not to feel intimidated by large groups of drunk young men is much more important than some doomed crusade to make our morals more European.
*** Expecting people to act civil when they are drunk is not a ridiculous expectation, either - I was drunk as **** Tuesday night and I managed to walk down the Red Mile without accosting or fighting anyone. It's a cop-out.
|
This is pretty much why I started this thread. There's a problem and it needs discussion or things won't change - or even worse, if it's not talked about it may become more socially acceptable.
