If you read the articles and twitter stuff, this discussion germinated from incidents that have occurred in the past couple weeks - one being the dude with the words on chest getting egged on by fellow dudes while the woman walked away feeling uncomfortable and harassed.

Well, the shirtless guy is an idiot but I'm not sure how that is considered harassment. Also, I live off of 17th and I haven't seen anything resembling harassment this year.

Misogyny is apparently well represented in Calgary.
I can't wait until some of you have daughters. Oh, my how your tune will change when the first young punk touches them, photographs them or otherwise when they are not willing. Or even wants to go out with them.

But it is the reality according to the article. It is wrong to ever blame the victim, however taking certain precautions goes a long ways to detering the reactions of the guys. It is not right, but cetain actions and attire bring out the worst in guys plain and simple.

It is very "well represented" everywhere, not just in Calgary.

Let's say I'm walking down the street and some guy gives me $100 = Cool
Another guy a few minutes later gives me $100 = Cool
Now me and 50 other guys start surrounding people, chanting "Give us your money! Give us your money!!!" = Definitely NOT COOL

Gentlemen, let's get real for a second. I assure you both in your life have at minimum unknowingly supported sexual harassment in your life or at some point will. So let's drop the knight in shining armor schtick and have a real conversation about a topic that is important.
Not once have I said its OK. But this is no different than a woman going to a bar where there are large crowds and knowing she looks hot and knows she's likely going to get hit on and is prepared to deal with it. She is educated by her peers and also protected. In most cases.
Is it right that she gets the unwanted attention? Some may argue that she put herself in that situation knowing that she would potentially be " harassed ".
The girl jumping on the car showing her "cans" is the girl who is adding fuel to the fire.
Now if she was aware that her actions put other women in a compromising and potentially dangerous situation, would she still chose to jump on said car?
That is a large part of the equation that people are ignoring.
There are large groups of horny young men with jot girls all over the place and many people both men and women are intoxicated in some fashion.
Let's not pretend the red mile is an innocent pg13 party where people are simply there to have a "good time". It is a out of control crowd that is partying and the police presence is there to simply show a presence and illusion of control.
But make no mistake, if you are going to the red mile, be prepared to protect yourself.
If you are a guy with a girl, and she is getting harassed be prepared to defend her.
If you are a group of girls going g down there, be prepared to be harassed.
Is it right? Absolutely not. But it is reality boys and girls. Let's not pretend it isn't the case and that the few villains should stop.
This is a problem with society and in one way or another, Willingly or not, we have all or will all support this kind of behavior. And in this case that is by simply being there.
Bottom line.

I remember 04. Some girls were looking for the attention and sitting on their friend shoulders to flash the crowd. Obviously alchohol had a LOT to do with it. The chanting happened every time a girl flashed and the crowd wanted more.
Women shouldn't feel unsafe to be down there and expected to flash anyone. I would hope they would wear their jerseys down to the red mile and be just as loud as the guys and don't start the flashing this time around. It just draws in all the 16-20 year old horny virgins to the mile (it seems many are down there based on 04s reputation alone).
We would want to see guys swinging their wangs out in the open would we? Why would we expect women to lift their shirts and chant for them to do so? This is not mardi gras. 04 was spontaneous, quit trying to force it you little virgins.

The consistent branding of anyone who isn't opposed to this as being a "rapist" or "misogynist" or anything else is pathetic.

While the discussion in that youtube clip is violence against women, the sentiment is the same when it comes to this type of discussion.
The only people that can stop men's inappropraite comments/actions against women sexually are men.
It is 100% on men, 0% on women.

What a terrible analogy, and as a man, this type of attitude is pretty offensive towards men. Plenty of us are capable of acting in a non-harassing manner and holding others accountable for their actions.

I find it very troubling that you don't think women can be violent towards or sexually harass other women.

So you think groping and harassment that isn't consensual is cool?

I find it troubling that you're willing to dismiss a valid concern over what basically amounts to semantics.

You damn right I have, I am embarrassed by some of what I did in my 20's, but I have grown up.

Wait you get that "hitting" on a girl at a bar isn't harrassment right?
Continueing to hit on her after she has said she is not interested is harrassment.
Getting you buddies to surround her on the dance floor and chant to see her tits......well yeah maybe harrassment

Not only does it completely dismiss a very real problem, but it also suggests that women are completely, 100% incapable of having any impact on their lives and how they deal with harassment and violence.
It isn't semantics, it's flat out wrong. Especially in a thread that started with a group of women trying to create a less threatening environment on 17th. 'Don't bother ladies, this is 100% on men to fix'.

It was fun while it lasted in 04. Calgary has grown up a bit since then. I know my wife has a opportunity to go down there tonight but she declined. Its 2015 people my wife can't go somewhere fun because she's afraid? That's wrong.
