Pretty similar.
Either could be 2 min, or not depending how strict the refs are being that game.

I'd actually rather see Burrows trying to throw hits like that then his usual crap.
The instigator was clear though and that's an NHL rule.
A stupid rule IMO, but a rule non the less and they should either enforce it or get rid of it.

Interesting takes in this thread.

Burrows and bieksa was just good old time hockey to me. Settle that on the ice.

The hamhuis hit I thought was more careless than intentional. 2 mins and a fatal goal later, he has been punished appropriately. I get that others see it differently, and totally respect that take too.

To me the worst infraction last night was bieksa's slash on gaudreau. That was at least 2mins and maybe 5.

Yikes. I'm not sure if you are serious but that was absolutely not good Ole time hockey.

Hamhuis was a intent to injure. Meat head 3 started whaling on a defenceless player pinned on the boards. Burrows was borderline but still was a cheap hit.

Canucks can't play clean hockey between the whistles.

The thing that annoys me is that their "stars" are rats, and ours aren't. What is Hartley supposed to do now that Burrows and Bieksa are out there targeting our best players? He can't put out Bollig and Ferland or he'll get fined. No way to protect our guys from their POS rats. Such a joke.

Hartley& Desjardains just had a conversation in the hallway that ended with a handshake. Seems like they got any potential message from #NHL

It IS old time hockey. The type of old time hockey that these rules were put in place specifically to get rid of. The type of old time hockey that has class action lawsuits of hundreds of players filing against the league for lack of concern over their safety.

What Ferland was doing is the proper way to put "old time hockey" into practice in todays NHL. By hitting hard and clean. Back it up when you have to.

Jumping people and punching helpless players on the ice has no place in the game, and arguably never did as it would cause full bench brawls. Obviously people didn't like it.

If they rescinded the Burrows instigator they should probably just remove that "last 5 minute rule" from the rule book. It never seems to apply.

Desjardins seems like a respectable guy. I'd have to think he's not pleased at all with his team last night. It doesn't surprise me that he and Hartley are amiable about the whole situation. The blame here is on the NHL for allowing it to continue and the few players who are doing it, as they have a well-documented history of being complete ass hats.

May as well just play next game without refs at this rate.

I know the dad of a kid that played for him in Medicine Hat, and he had nothing but good things to say about him. Both in his approach to the game and how he dealt with his players.

It is sad that he is caught up in the stink that is this canucks team.

Desjardins said a couple calls he felt weren't penalties at the time turned out to be legit when he looked at the tape. Pretty honest.

No, they made this one up on the fly right after the rule came into effect. The very first coach that would have been fined for one of these last-five minute instigators would have been Gretzky. Since that would have been embarrassing for the league, the "zero tolerance" rule was hastily retconned to allow the league a get out of punishment free card whenever it becomes inconvenient.

Which is how Burrows can be permitted to try and injure one of our top players and pick fight with no consequences.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for both Willie Desjardins and Trevor Linden. However, as far as the rest of the Canucks are concerned, well as my mom tells me, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

If I could venture a guess, I imagine the discussion was based around the fighting in the last 5 minutes. It's my assumption that the NHL warned both teams that no more instigators would be rescinded. With that being said, I expect nothing else to change (slashes, cross checks, questionably late hits) during the first 55 minutes by both teams.

The NHL is just terribly incompetent in this year's playoffs. Can't seem to get any supplementary disciplines right (i.e. no suspension on Subban, puzzling fine for Hartley, now this, etc.)

The league has higher-ranking officials who can use video-replay to re-examine game incidents and issue supplementary discipline for infractions missed by the officials, or which the officials handled poorly. Those officials have also failed to prevent a climate of head-hunting, hitting from behind, slashing, fights instigated in the final minutes, and fights where players are sucker-punched or ganged up on. They've gone so far as to waive supplementary punishment that are called for in their own rules.

And now the league tells the teams that it's not happy with how the series is going?

You're paid to administer discipline! Do your job!
Excellent post.
It is an odd thing about hockey - the league doesn't seem to ever take full responsibility for discipline or removing things from the game they don't want.
Which then furthers the position some have on why we need fighting - to provide the accountability that the league doesn't provide (not my opinion to be clear but the opinion of some)
But then the league steps in and says "knock that off" while still not ACTUALLY administering any discipline.
And around and around we go.

The biggest issue IF any of those results in an injury the punishment would have been severe.

Bennett Hurt and out with concussion ? I'm guessing 2 games
Bieska 1 punches Ferland and knocks him out ? I'm guessing the rest of the series
Burrows knocks out Russell? 1-2 games.

I actually only have an issue with the Bieska play. Hamhuis was reckless, and he got a penalty, but I don't think he was actually head hunting as opposed to trying to hit a rookie hard. A fine and warning as a 1st time offender would be good.

Burrows through a hard hit, that was bording, but sort, kinda a bit from the side. Russell approached and I would probably assumed he was coming to fight and thrown off the gloves.

But Bieska is sucker punching a guy with your glove off 4-5 times. If he injures him people are talking 5-10 games. That is as bad as you will see in today's NHL.

So why have these rules and allow the refs to make the calls of they can just go back on them. Engelland should've been automatically suspended for game 3, Burrows for game 4. The rule isn't doesn't have a "eh, unless it's the playoffs and the guy he fought is okay for the next game" clause. Instigator = suspension. Just get rid of the rule, it's bush league to decide when to enforce it and when not to.

1 key differentiation.
Engelland's entire integrator penalty was rescinded because the league found it the incorrect call.
Burrows did not have his penalty rescinded, just the punishment that goes along with it under the rule.
