If there was a delayed penalty being called before the missed goal, that wouldn't apply, just like if you score when the other team has a delayed penalty coming. If Winnipeg had taken a penalty at the end of the play (after the missed goal was scored) instead of Anaheim, it still would have been applied.
Thought somebody on Twitter posted it wouldn't have counted if Jets took the penalty. Confusing on how it reads a little.

Reads to me like it won't count if they take it during play. If they take it after the whistle then it counts.

Yeah, it's weirdly written in the NHL rule book.

Kerry Fraser tweeted about it tonight too, and he made it sound like any Winnipeg penalty would have been wiped out by the goal, which is a stupid rule if true.

The IIHF rule book is much more clear in this case, and it definitely depends on the order of events. That happened in the Olympics last year. A goal was scored and an infraction was committed by the team scored upon after the goal and they still got the penalty.

That's the only example I can think of, and it was under IIHF rules. It would be stupid if the NHL rules were different, but the NHL has some stupid rules.

What happened to all the Jets fans around here...?

Honestly that was a tough loss and I feel for them. Corey Perry is a beast.

Watched the game and have a few notes;

-That's the best game I've seen Perry play for a while. He took over that game in the 3rd period.
-Jets played just okay but they don't have that dominant line like the Ducks do. They really never forced the play and kind of played a conservative game.
-For the life of me I do not understand after the Perry goal the NHL moves the clock back to the time of the goal essentially saying that the play after the goal never existed except the minor penalty that happened during the now non-existent play carries over. This makes absolutely no sense. If you are going pretend that all the shifts, shots, plays etc no longer count how do you count a minor penalty that happened during the same events? The NHL has to look at this as I thought it was a little bush league.

I'm still not sold on the Ducks goaltending but if Perry and Getzlaf continue to play like this the Jets are going to be in tough to extend this series.

Did you miss the 1st half of the game? The Jets dominated and nearly went up 3-1 if not for a post shot. Yes Anaheim took over for the 2nd half off the game but.... they absolutely dominated and imposed their will physically on the Ducks for half this game.

I've never understood this sentiment. For all the good it does, a post shot might as well have missed the net and bounced off the end-boards, or been deflected by the goalie. It's no closer to a goal than say a shoulder deflection.

It was an open net at the time. Even if the puck was shot slightly wide it'd still be a glorious chance missed.

The Ducks really flexed their muscles in the later half of that game and the Jets just ended up getting frustrated and stupid.

The Ducks are the real deal, the Jets aren't there yet.

Dominated is a huge overstatement.

Both teams had good stretches in the first 40, and it was pretty equal with the game being a physical battle. Shots were 23-17 Ducks after the first two periods so it wasn't like the Jets were driving play.

The Jets played great in the first 40 but it was still pretty close and at most a slight advantage.

The shift that really changed the tide of the game IMO was the shift where first Enstrom was rocked, and then Scheifele.

After that shift the Ducks started to take control.

Ya the momentum of the game def shifted in the middle of the 2nd no doubt. But just before that Winnipeg missed a wide open net and hit the post, and before that Thorburn had a wide open rebound and shot it directly into Andersens gut. Galley, who spent the whole night talking about his man crush on Perry, said the Ducks look totally rattled.

The Ducks were the better team but the Jets carried the play plenty and had 2 narrow misses that would have put this game perhaps out of reach. I don't see this being a 5 games or less situation for Anaheim... but now I'm worried they beat the Jets in 6 @ home instead of 7.

Maybe because penalties (unlike any other plays) can happen when the clock is stopped? Usually it's stuff like bench minors, unsportsmanlikes or fighting, but maybe there's no list of penalties which can exist and which can't without the clock moving.

I thought the Jets played pretty well (remember, that is a tough barn to win in), but similar to the Flames game, even down a goal, it did seem that the ice was tilted in favour of the Ducks for the second half. Felt like only a matter of time for the Ducks to tie it up and then win it. Second game should be a good one.

Yeah was just disputing that you said the Jets dominated the first half of the game.

They had a 3 minute period around the goal they scored that they really were carrying the play, but to translate that into them dominating the first half of the game is inaccurate.

I thought both teams played good, really physical playoff hockey and both teams play similar styles.

I wouldn't count the Jets out yet. Could still win game 2 and head home with a split which is all you really want. IMO the MTS center is going to be hell for the opposition team, going to be tough to steal a game there.

My biggest question is how do they respond, specifically Buff as he was invisible to me. Game 2 will dictate how this series goes, either 5 games at best for the Ducks or a 7 game beat down.

No matter how this series goes, even if we get swept, the season is a success. Most hockey experts, including the Hockey News were predicting a 7th place finish for us. We've exceeded expectations, and have many promising prospects, including Hellebuyck, Copp, Ehlers, Morrissey, Petan, and others who will likely join the club next year.

Having said that, this is my recap:

-Jets ran out of gas at the end of the second period
-Jets could not match up our bottom 6 with the Ducks bottom 6
-the Ducks were up to the challenge in physical play
-Ladd is not 100% and Buff was nearly invisible

Hopefully Perreault comes back next game. If not, I would seriously consider moving Buff to forward, and recalling Harrison. Harrison is underrated, and is a tough, big, and physically dominant defensemen.

In order for the Jets to come back, we ahve to play more aggressively. We're the bigger team, and we need to keep hitting without taking dumb penalties. We also need to keep pressure on Anderson, and not be afraid to rush the net, or screen him.
