I saw an interview a while ago with the show creators and the guys who play John and Samwell and they basically said they know where they are going with the story. Unfortunately it is the same ending as what Martin has in mind, and they will get there first, but the way they get there might not be the same.
So reading the books will still get you a different story, but ultimately the same result. I think by now we can mostly guess what that will be.

Presumably, that would be Cersei's walk from the Sept to the castle at the end of the last book.
If that scene is going to appear this season, they'll basically be caught up to the books, at least for that storyline.

Ah I did not hear about that, but it makes sense to be the scene you describe.
That whole fall from power while lacking the out of nowhere intensity of the Red Wedding and Tywin's demise is still a very big moment in the series. It will be great watching it play out on screen.

They're already caught up with Bran already.

I believe they didn't leave the Eyrie until the end of book 5. I can see why they skip over the Robin is a whiny bitch parts in the books. The actor playing Robin would look to old to pull that off any more.

I'm wondering if they're going to have the Dornish prince (can't remember his name storyline) play out releasing the dragons. It's a pretty crucial moment, but they haven't really set it up at all.

And I wonder if the Greyjoys will be skipped completely.

I think that's a given at this point. They could've done something with Damphair back in Season 3 but completely skipped it.

I know I read that the kingsmoot was going to be completely skipped.

Plenty of opportunity for that this season as it's the first real look into Dorne and Dany only sealed up her dragons at the end of last season.
Anyone else not watching in favour of the books?

I'm hopefully planning to live until the next one, so I'd rather the story's best conclusion rather than its earliest.

At least Martin has started cancelling appearances to wrap up the book.

A Song of Ice and Fire **Spoilers** Now more TV talk!
I hope Martin to finishes Winds of Winter and Dream of Spring close together. Finish them both and have them released like 6 months apart. I'd rather Martin finish them himself. Verses the other option where someone has to finish it for him.

I'm sure he'll finish them both himself, and that they will (probably) conclude the series. I just expect them 5-7 years apart. And that's from whatever unknown time The Winds of Winter is released.

Part of me is wondering if the reason Winds of Winter is taking so long is because he's working on both at the same time, kind of like books 4 and 5.

And yet those two books came out 6 years apart.
