Its a deal, that's about it, as much as the fans up there want to blame Eakins, Yak is just not the player they thought he was. Even in his resurgence, I believe in the last 10 games before the Canucks game he had 1 goal.
I just don't think he has the hockey IQ to be anymore then a 2nd or third line tweener winger.
I can't believe he's considered a core player.

Not sure why he would sign a bridging contract when he has seen all of the other first round picks getting 6x6 deals, surely that is the standard second contract in Oiler land??
Taylor Hall's first 3 seasons: 171 games played, 145 points.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' first 3 seasons: 182 games played, 132 points.
Jordan Eberle's first 3 seasons: 195 games played, 156 points.
Nail Yakupov's first 3 seasons: 192 games played, 88 points.
One of these things is not like the other.

Homer goggles aside that's a completely sensible deal from the Oilers' perspective. There's really not much downside there.
Homer goggles back on, it's one of the few sensible things they've done and not enough to push back the glacier of ineptitude that continues to overrun the franchise.

Seriously though, if the guy wasn't a 1st overall pick, he would probably be considered a good prospect still. They would be better off trading him to a team that can develop him properly.

GOod in the sense the Oilers need to put some limits on their patience. The combination of this guy's utter lack of hockey sense and their complete faiure to teach the guy the game at the pro level means he has 2 years to salvage an NHL career. That seems fair.
Then, with any luck, Detroit will pick him up on waivers and turn him into a 40-goal scorer.

It is a good deal. You can argue that you are still paying for his pedigree somewhat. I still think he is going to be a better option than Eberle down the road on their top line. Difficult to low-ball him as he can just refuse and go to Russia. However, Yakupov wouldn't have come over to play junior in North America to only then bolt back to Russia. Low-ball him too much, and he will, but I think this is a pretty good deal all things considered.
