For lack of a better term, Johnny has the best brand name of all the contenders. Heck, he even trademarked Johnny Hockey. He's undersized, relatively humble, American, played in the World Juniors, Frozen Four, won the Hobey Baker, helped turn around a rebuilding Flames team, and he's a damn good player. He has the most name recognition of any of the leading rookies by far.
I agree with you though. I kinda wish it was completely merit based. It would be a much closer decision if it was.

Vote is gonna be close...rival media members are not gonna vote for JG, in fact they will go out of their way to try and prevent him from getting it

Dennis Hull on Fan 960 right now with Steinberg says Johnny Hockey is his favourite NHL player to watch.

you think Ottawa or Edmonton media are gonna be voting for JH?
I am already seeing tons of people talking up Stone now, even though he is in his 3rd year of pro hockey and played 19 NHL games last season

Mark Stone will be getting some serious consideration now....I think Forsberg might drop out of the top 3...
It should be Ekblad who drops, but some people think he deserves votes because of his age for some reason.

by the same token, why would anyone in Toronto, Florida or Nashville vote for Stone?
Iggy was screwed because one voter didn't even put him in the top five, which was utterly ridiculous.

Yes I do (maybe not Ottawa). Both Terry Jones and Jim Matheson who are HOF hockey writers in Edmonton have pledged support for Calgary this season. Matheson has commented on how exciting Johnny is.
Ottawa will give support to their own, but that's hardly conspiracy. I think Johnny wins

Canucks media will push Bo Horvat and his amazing 23 point season and he also leads the team in one category even if it's his -9 rating I guess that's leading the team at something.

I'm just saying I wouldn't go counting those chickens before they hatch, I honestly think he should win but have my doubts he will
Stone played a NHL game in the 2011-2012 season for crying out loud

It comes down to the playoffs. If we clinch and Johnny has a single point in that game 100% chance he wins the Calder.

Sens clinch in the final game and stone has a couple points to take over the rookie scoring lead?
I'm telling you guys don't get your hopes too high, how many Flames players have won voted for awards?

How many have earned it????? Even though there was one crooked voter against Iggy it was still very close and that was more than 10 years ago. There's no anti-flames conspiracy

Did it?
I don't think media gives a crap, it's the media not the fans. I can't imagine the likes of Francis, or Duha, or any of the 960 guys not voting for a deserving Oiler (if they had a vote). These guys hop around, go where the work is, they aren't rival teams fans.

Montreal media guy didn't put Iggy in the top 5 in 2003 and it cost him the hart
