I would imagine, and this is just speculation mind you, that the cost of operating the Saddledome without a major tenant would vastly exceed any revenues it would generate.
It would be nice to keep around, but the land is valuable and without a professional team in it the facility would likely be hemorrhaging money.

I would imagine cost of upkeep would be a big reason not to keep it around.

The Flames will want the Hitmen and Roughnecks to play in the new arena.

I think the idea is to spur re-development in the area. Without this plan it will sit there for at least another decade.

I believe the plan is to develop the whole west side of downtown that's basically just a massive waste of space right now. South of the river where the dealerships, greyhound station, pumphouse theatre and that military building are. Not sure what they're planning for Millenium park but my sense is that it's going to be gone in a few years.
Here is a link to the area redevelopment plan (sorry if it's been posted before):
West Village Area Redevelopment Plan
EDIT: According to the current iteration of the plan, Millenium Park will stay.

Don't want to derail this thread, but I think its something they should genuinely consider. Bathrooms are a big enough issue in the dome as it is due to the bottlenecks.

This is a joke, right? Do you honestly believe anyone believes that post wasn't a total troll job, and you're really concerned about gender-neutral washrooms for Vancouver fans?

The economics of stadiums and the city in general pretty much guarantee the Dome will be torn down. Kinda sad, I'd consider THAT a historic building even though it's not old. Pretty iconic to the city.
But I get if it has to come down. I guess a lot of it depends on if the Stampede board thinks it's of any value to them?

I get the Armory, obviously.

When the new Spark was built, I recall there was some uproar over the fate of the Planetarium, and there was a group trying to get it declared an historic building. I believe they were successful, but I could be wrong on that.
The rationale is that it was built as Calgary's Centennial Project in 1967. To celebrate Canada's centennial, the Federal government gave money to every community in Canada to build some sort of commemorative infrastructure. This is why many small towns across Canada have arenas with names like The Centennial Civic Centre or Centennial Arena. Calgary used its money to build the Planetarium. Before it was renamed the Science Centre in the 80s or 90s, it was known as the Centennial Planetarium.

Hokay, I'll bite.
Even if they did consider this progressive step, which would be a welcome addition for some parts of the LGBT community, it wouldn't be just for Vancouver fans, but also Flames fans (probably the majority, actually) among others. So that's taken care of.
As far as bottlenecks, I can't see that the actual number of people using a gender-neutral bathroom would have any impact on the overall bathroom bottleneck, given that the % of those who want to use it to feel safe is such a small percentage of the total attending population of events. Mostly, it would probably be used by regular delta-bravos going in and clogging up the works because the line is shorter / or to come out and tell his bros that he ran into <insert gender-insensitive comment here> in said bathroom.
Book 'im, Jiri-o.

I like how the old Montreal Forum was turned into an entertainment venue and the history of the rink was integrated in its design.
I don't think the same happens to the dome because it lacks the history of the forum. I would still be sad to see it demolished because it hosted the Olympics and is such an iconic design fixture in the city. If the Dome gets demolished, I think the Stampede Grounds because much less of a destination other than during Stampede.

Plus it wouldn't have a scoreboard or power ring.

LOL - made me to a quick lookup to what an ODR was...
It would be cool, but as we are talking about an area in the middle of Stampede Park, I just can't see how that would be usable/feasible...
