The guy played 66 games in a Calgary Flames uniform. This isn't Gary Roberts we're talking about. Should I really be emotionally invested in his future?

Baertschi is a prospect who didn't pan out. End of story. I don't care what he does now, not because I'm bitter or feel betrayed - I just never cared that much in the first place.

Ehh, I liked Sven, but he never proved he was good enough for this team, and adversity is something he clearly struggles with. In an organization that isn't about to coddle you, that was always going to be a problem.

And given how many other players are thriving in Calgary right now, if the situation here was toxic, it was Baertschi who was the poison. Unfortunate, but it happens.

So if we're going to interpret other peoples words and change them, Healy called Johnny a cancer, the oilers passing on Sam is like them calling him a cancer and every team that wants to win against the Flames essentially thinks the Flames are cancer. Unless you have something amazing to say about the Flames, you think they're cancer.

I didn't like Sven that much and I now dislike him to the point of hating him because he's part of the nucks organization. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on this.

Yup. I cannot harbour any warm sentiment towards a Vancouver Canuck.

In a perverse way I hope the acquisition of Sven Baertschi is the final factor that plunges the Canucks into a longterm tailspin of Oiler proportions. Hopefully he shows some promise, makes the team and then plays so frustratingly 1-dimensionally that the Nucks miss the playoffs consistently for the next decade.

But wouldn't it be better if he doesn't bust, but instead contributes to the culture of NHL suckiness that Vancouver deserves? I hope he's an NHLer for years to come, but consistently puts up as many negative stats and turnovers he possibly can.

No - let's call it what it is - which is you misquoting people and misrepresenting what they said. The word cancer is pretty heavy - so in the future don't say that people have used that word to refer to a player unless they have actually done that. Otherwise it is just inflammatory.

Totally late here... but really not surprised, I don't think anybody really ever doubted Sven's skill. The issue was never how good he was when he was good, the issue was how bad he was when he would lose confidence and moop around with his head down (source: Eric D)

No, that isn't the case what so ever. Using one word to encompass is much more convenient then listing a paragraph of phrases, wouldn't you agree?

The point isn't the use of the word "cancer" so much as a bunch of Flames fans on a Flames message board participating in revisionist history for the purposes of denigrating the character of an ex-prospect. Highlighting (or inventing) the player's negative aspects, minimizing (or ignoring) their positive attributes, and expressing serious pessimism about their chances of amounting to anything when compared to previous hopes and dreams.

In other words, the same exact thing that every other fanbase has always done and will always do when their player gets traded in any sport...

Also, realize that not everyone lives on this forum for 20 hours a day. People have other obligations outside of immediately responding to a post. Especially when The Walking Dead/Talking Dead finale is on
Actually, my position on the Sven situation has been pretty consistent for the past two years, and hasn't changed at all since his trade out.

Also, as others have pointed out, I've never once called him a "cancer" or even ever implied his issue are the type related to what often gets catagorized as a "cancerous" player. So it's not about people getting off their "high horses" or getting too particular about word choice, it's that you particular choice of word and the grouping of the statements you read into said bucket indicate you have no clue what my or others peoples opinion actually is on the matter.

You seem to be indicating that there can only be "one type" of attitude problem. The type that eats a team up from within and means bad things about the player in question. Sven was hurting no one but himself with his attitude issues. He wasn't creating a toxic environment for those around him, and I've never once suggested he was. He's a guy who to date, has not handled adversity well, and is not up for proving himself. He's a guy that when he thinks about why he's not succeeding, points the finger outwardly first at his environment or to others on what they are or aren't doing for him, rather than looking internally at the things he can control. None of those = cancer, but they do = someone who I don't think is a winner and doesn't have the right make up for this team. Totally different things though.

Then you could use the common term of 'entitlement issues' which has been repeated in those previous posts. Let's face it, entitlement issues to being a cancer is a pretty big jump.

Just for fun - I went to the Central Scouting list to see who we might get in mid-second round:

Kind of random, but:

MELOCHE, NICOLAS BAIE-COMEAU QMJHL D 6' 2.5" 202

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...013292015.html

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=213821

A smooth skating defenceman who can put up points, utilizing his strength behind his shot, and plays with an edge. Has very good awareness on the ice, and notices possible scoring chances before they happen. Very intelligent defensively and makes high percentage decisions in his own end. When at the top of his game, Nicolas Meloche can be a game-changing, physical two-way defenceman. (Curtis Joe, EP 2014)

I would argue that the bind you've put yourself in with many posters here has made this whole thing much LESS convenient for you, no?

I just don't get the hate directed at Baertschi. To me he hasn't looked like a promising prospect since I watched him in Penticton but otherwise he's just a young guy trying to adjust to the knocks of trying to establish a career. He's having some trouble adjusting but he wouldn't be the first 22 year old having the same problems. I wish him luck.

This. I'd care about the same amount as I would if Greg Nemisz suddenly started to light it up. Sven's just another ex-Flame prospect
